    Handwriting Question

I'm in the process of applying for jobs, some which have applications to fill out in addition to submitting a cover letter and resume. I naturally write/print in all caps - I have pretty good handwriting, but find writing in all caps more legible. And I've written that way ever since I gave up cursive around 7th grade.

I filled out an app in all caps and a roommate saw it and recommended I re-do it in "normal" print because it would otherwise be seen as unprofessional...a google search was indecisive, with some saying it doesn't matter and others essentially saying I'm doomed forever.

What are the thoughts of the CF crew? HR people around these parts?

PS-I'm aware that typing in ALL CAPS is considered "yelling". Same when printing?

I see lots of applications, I would not consider an all caps one a negative. I would figure you were an engineer or something.

I can't write in cursive, but I would suggest you go with proper capitalization in the RARE event you have to do this, as I recall - the application was usually a formality after you had the job, perhaps that has changed, but I filled out very few apps before I had an interview and/or job offer, With this in mind - focus on your resume and cover letters.

If I saw your Application in all caps, I would just assume you are yelling at me.

Doesn't matter as long as it's legible.

    Dear Clone2011,

Thank you for your interest in this position. Unfortunately, we have chosen to go in a different direction at this time.

    Re: Handwriting Question

Haha thanks for the replies, serious and otherwise. Will stick with what's natural for me.

Just tried to fill out a page of one app with "normal" print, and it was awkward and slow, looked fake, and was annoying. One app has the front page of all the contact info that specifies to type or print legibly, then the second page says "please complete the rest of this application using your normal handwriting". Never seen that before.

    Re: Handwriting Question

I also write in all caps for legibility, however one thing not everyone does is still have 'upper' and 'lowercase' letters, I do this by using a smaller form of the letter if it's not capitalized.

    Re: Handwriting Question

Don't know if it matters to those opposed to all caps or not, but I write more like this:

(Distinctive bigger first letter when appropriate)

    and NOT like this:

(Same letter size across the board)

Same here (beat me to it). I feel like it makes a big difference.

I change my response, I like that. I would do it like that if I were you.

    Re: Handwriting Question

Didn't want to start another thread, but another question has come up in filling out job applications -- some ask for "Personal/Character References", which I've never been asked to supply before. These are entry/low-mid level full time jobs and not all of them ask for these references.

I've had my top 3 to 5 professional references saved in a document for a while now, but Personal? What kind of people do I list, and probably more importantly, what kind of people do I NOT list?
