    Univ of New Mexico

I still think in the LONG run UNM is a great option for the Big Twelve.

    Student population 34k

No major sports league teams in the state (like IA, Neb)

Contiguous with the existing conference geography.

NMSU is significantly smaller (18 k and remote from Alb - the state's population center)

State population 2 million plus (not huge but if they're the only game in town they get majority of the TV sets in the state)

    Negatives - Small stadium
Bad FB team - Actually, this is a good thing. If ISU could get a regular conference game against a lesser team and actually win 8 out of the next 10 years it would definitely help our bowl game prospects.

In the long run I think they could upgrade stadium. Once they are in the big time their recruiting should improve, with access to TX talent like ISU and the rest of the conference.

    Great history in MBB

Albuquerque is a decent sized city. Travel (air) would be distant but the university is in the town so on the ground transportation is easy.

I agree with the positives. Exactly how small is their stadium?

39,224. Not tiny but I think too small. I didn't research the rest of the Big XII but I think that would be the smallest.

for the football tams sake I'd rather see teams north of Oklahoma join incase we every go back to having divisions. I know they can divide it any way they want but north/south is the most obvious.

Maybe if we let them into the Big 12, there is some stipulation that they must expand the stadium by 10 to 15 thousand by five years from now or something.

    Re: Univ or New Mexico

There are plenty of schools with growth potential the Big 12 should look at (Houston, Memphis, SMU, etc...) but the first thing any conference is looking at right now is who delivers the most TV sets. I'm thinking we may roll with just BYU for a couple years until the Big 12 can prove it's still a solid conference. Then we may have a better shot at landing teams like Notre Dame & Arkansas.

it's pretty small, I was just there Saturday. The football team has sucked for 3-4 years now, and I would say the stadium was 60-70% full- but TT is a big draw so it is probably less for mwc games. Basketball sells out at 17k all the time, though. The fans are pretty passionate about MBB and WBB.

You could still add two north and one south. Actually, if you'd like to see north/south divisions, that's what I'd hope for because I think you'd see something different if they had to start talking about splitting up the Kansas or OSU schools. Maybe they'd move Mizzou south if we add three schools that were further north, but that seems like you'd get pretty unbalanced divisions.

    Their stadium has definite expandability.

And would get people off our back about having the "least big time" looking stadium.

Albuquerque population is 545,000 in 2010. Twice the size of DSM. Metro is 900k population.

I remember there was a MBB Final Four there. Maybe about 1990 or so.

I would be ok with adding NM and then BYU and Air Force. NM plays with the south, BYU and Air Force in the north.

Yea, that's a solid option B if they decide it's not a good idea to touch the Big East schools. If they appear to be making a legitimate run at salvaging that as a BCS league (debatable if possible at this point) it might not be worth the legal problems and bad PR that might come with adding them.

    Re: Univ or New Mexico

Nothing energizes a conference fanbase like adding the worst team in the FBS.

The B12 is in no shape to take on a project, if they aren't already up to snuff, there is no need for them.

If you are a believer in the population trend analyses we see around the interwebs, the Albuquerque metro area is projected to be 2 million by 2030. That is a pretty decent number even if it only comes close.

How many of them would watch Big12 football? That's the relevant question until we can build a BigTen style subscriber-based model where it's cable-subscribers and not ratings that matter. If and until that occurs, it's about delivering ratings and based on that UNM doesn't make the top 4-5 options in my opinion.

    Cheers
