    Starting Five.

New images are up on the Official roster: Basketball (W) - Roster - Iowa State University Athletics Official Web Site - www.CYCLONES.com - The home of Iowa State Cyclone Sports

Fennelly stressed many times that the point guard is the most important position on the floor in his offense at the start of 2010 season. It was also the biggest question mark coming into last season and Lauren won the spot. Will she hold on to it this season?

With nearly 40 days left until Coe it struck me that we have little to go on as to who will round out the starting five. Other than three obvious locks in Prins, Poppens and Christofferson, I see Lauren opening and holding on at the one well into the season. Considering the talent coming in Moody, and with Cole and Schroll in the mix, it really depends -- but experience usually wins out at least early on.

Last season Fennelly effectively used three guards at times and maybe will again this year. But as has been discussed two guard play will be more likely this season and who will be in that rotation for 2011-12?

This year will be very interesting because it is by far BF's deepest team ever. Truly he has two starting fives he could use. Christofferson, Prins and Poppens are the only guarantees. Schroll will be solid but doesn't shoot from outside so will be more of a role player and defensive specialist. I love all the ladies and I think this could be an Elite 8 kind of year if the freshmen deliver on expectation. Dying for the season to start!!!

Here is what I'm guessing, without having seen the freshmen play or a single pickup minute (minutes in parens)

    starting
    1 Lauren (18)
    2 Jess (25)
    3 Hallie (28)
    4 Pop (28)
    5 Anna (25)

    off the bench
    1 Nikki (15)
    1-2 Chas (16)
    2-3 Kelsey (15)
    4-5 Zimm (15)
    rest of the freshmen (15)

    Re: Starting Five.

I think we will be good this year, NCAA tourney team, but I don't think this is the elite 8 year. I believe we will have a shot at winning the big 12 and being elite 8 the following year. Full year for a very good freshman class, hallie a junior, Jess, Pop, Anna, Zimmerman seniors. That I think is our year for a special season. Excited about this year, but next could be really special.

Deep, but we have no stars and the other thing we lack is a leader. "Leadership is ultimately about creating a way for people to contribute to making something extraordinary happen." Alan Knuth. Seniors usually feel the call and step up as did Bolte last year and Lacey prior.

Cole and Mansfield are in that position. An endearing soft-spoken transplant, Lauren would have the floor skills but is in her to take the reins? And Chassidy would have to make strides too if not a persona make-over from my observations.

Poppens is a force and she may take over by example. Maybe it will truly be a team effort though often a winning team has key players that take the load when needed. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I'd agree with you in Jess. Jess literally elbowed the opponents aside and I could see her in the starting line. Moody is the intriguing newbie at guard (and for overall intrigue Mays takes that prize) and she'll see early action.

    Re: Starting Five.

Most may have seen this but, Lauren and Brynn have preseason interviews up on the Iowa State Athletics site. Lauren lets her hair down and appears mature and poised. Brynn does pretty well too: Home - Iowa State University Athletics Official Web Site - www.CYCLONES.com - The home of Iowa State Cyclone Sports

I'm Chassidy and Lauren will be decent leaders themselves, but I think players like Chelsea are going to step up and take some of the leadership role as well. If I remember right, Chelsea seemed to follow some characteristics of Bolte last year, so I think she learned a lot about what leadership on the team really means.

    Re: Starting Five.

Based on how things ended last year (go back and read my end of season review) there are some things that need to happen for this to be a successful season.

First - who will be the outside shooters? Will Harris gain consistency? What guards will step up that we KNOW will be deadly from deep? How does the change in 3 point line impact the shooters?

Second - will the bigs start playing tough? Pop is tough, but woefully inconsistent shooting the ball. Prins has had two years of weak hands on the boards and a lack of aggression inside. Will Zimm be healthy? If that trio is healthy and shows leadership then that frees Big C to move more which is to her benefit.

third - who will spell Loz?

We get those questions answered and we'll have a solid picture of how this team will be. Baylor is the class of the Big 12 right now. ATM lost some solid players, but gets some top recruits in. OU will be good. After that...its up for grabs.

I just don't know if BF can go with that starting lineup. He really relies on having 3/4 shooters on the floor at all times. With that lineup you have MAYBE 2 if Hallie is on this year. With Lauren's small size she can not get shots up very easily. This bothered her a lot last year. That might be 0 3pt threats on the floor in that starting 5.

I think BF is going to have a tough year coming up with a lineup based on the outside shooters. He REALLY needs KH to step up and be able to play 25+ minutes.

    Re: Starting Five.

My depth chart would look like this:

    PG: Loz, Chas, Moody
SG: Ellis, Chas, Jess, Harris, Moody, Ellie
SF: Big C, Brynn, Jess, Ellis, Harris
PF: Pop, Big C, Zimm, Jess, Brynn, Ellis
C: Prins, Pop, Big C, Zimm, Mays,

We need someone in the 2 position who can create their own shot and shoot the three. Ellis can do both and play tough D. The last couple of years Ellis has played on and been leader of one of the top 20 AAU teams in the country. She has the talent to start as a freshman in this conference. As far as leadership goes on this team, I see Loz taking over from Bolte but with the juniors stepping up to help. BF teams are usually led by strong point gaurds who want the ball in late game situations. I see us being one of the top four teams in the Big 12 and depending on the draw be able to go into the second round of the big dance.

I'm sure everyone has been working hard on their range and consistency over the off season. BF said last year Prins had the best shot mechanics, and I'm sure she will go outside and leave the interior offensive position to Pop even more this year. Hallie hit a respectable 35% last year, though she definitely didn't look for it as often as she probably will now. I think Jess and Pop are both quite dynamic despite their not being good 3 pt shooters, I'd be glad to see them together and let the other 3 keep the defense spread out. Hallie at the 3 would help our rebounding at both ends, as would Jess at the 2. I'll be curious to see who of the freshmen is ready to dig in and compete for PT. If it is all of them, the coaches will have their hands full managing a rotation but us fans will be so happy to see it.
I'll also be curious to see if the zone will start coming back. I would love to see Hallie and Pop on the wings. To be great at zone AND man would be such a luxury and advantage.

If Schroll has not improved her outside shot, she is too much of an offensive liability to start, especially with Poppens also a starter.

The offense was a nightmare at times last season due to the lack of shooters. Defenses were slacking off the poor shooters and mucking things up for the ones who could shoot. Harris and at least two of the freshmen need to pick up the outside shooting void or else this will be, by far, Bill's worst offensive team of his tenure and one of his worst teams, period.

    Re: Starting Five.

One of the reasons I am excited to see this team this year is to see who steps up from the returning players, and which frosh have an impact and contribute.

Starting five, as usual, will probably change a lot until January or so.

My hunch is that Loz, Pop, and Hallie C. will be there. Of course, we might also see Anna crack that lineup too.

One thing that stuck out at me, as BF said that he learned a lot from the International play this summer coaching the USA team on offensive strategies for posts who shoot 3s.

My other hunch is we will see a lot of line-up change ups depending on what teams we are playing.
