New President to be Named Next Week

The state Board of Regents will name the next Iowa State University president on Sept. 27, officials said.
The search committee will meet Monday to present a summary of campus visits by the two finalists, and feedback from faculty, staff and students, said Regents President Craig Lang.
The Regents will meet the next day to interview the finalists in closed session, then publicly ask questions of the candidates, Lang said.
Details of the meetings next week have not been finalized, but an announcement of the next president will be made at the ISU alumni center, officials said.

The candidates apparently didn't take English 302. If you can't fit the information on 2 pages for a resume you have too much.

+1. Now of all times seems to be a terrible time to be making a change at the top.

    It's called a CV, not a resume...

Also Kumble Subbaswamy would be an awesome name for a president. Also looks more qualified. He gets my vote. I wonder if the other two withdrew due to the whole realignment mess?

What does this mean for when the new president will be taking over? January 1st? Sooner?

I had heard that with things moving quickly, GG wouldn't make it through the end of the academic year, but this seems a little quicker than was initially expected.

My money is on him based on his brief bio.

One of the regents indicated in an interview that two of the candidates were clearly above the rest. My money is on the others withdrawing when they may have found out that they weren't one of the two. Don't want their names getting out there without a serious shot at getting the job.

But what is his record on athletics? JP has repeatedly said that GG was one of the athletics department's biggest supporters. We definitely don't want to get a "community organizer" for a president...

I would be shocked if it wasn't Subbaswamy. The Register did a report on Leath, which I know they did another on Subbaswamy but I didn't see it, and a lot of the article focused on the lack of his diversity background. I assume they didn't have the same issues with Subbaswamy.

Neither of them seem to have any mention of passion for athletics from what I've seen. CPR said that JP was interviewing both candidates, so I hope he has a choice for a good candidate and not a choice of the lesser of two evils.

Either candidate seems to fit the academic side, but I'm guessing that Subbaswamy is the clear front-runner. I was surprised to see that Leath was second in the race for San Diego State's lead position as well. Not sure I want somebody that was turned down by SDSU just five months ago.

Coming in 2nd in another university search doesn't disqualify someone. Maybe he wasn't the perfect fit for that particular school. There are a thousand subjective variables and factors that go into a selection. Geoffroy, Jiske, etc. probably also were runners up in other searches before they were chosen for Iowa State. North Carolina, by the way, is on many lists as one of the "Public Ivies." Meaning it's a top-tier public university and it is very hard to get accepted there, even for in-state students.

Re: New President to be Named Next Week

After doing some more research, I think Subbaswamy will make a great university president (if not at Iowa State, then somewhere else).

From a general perspective, Geoffroy planned his retirement at a good time for Iowa State. There are a large number of executive officers retiring or reaching retirement age, and there is some concern there will be a shortage of qualified replacements. Here's a great graph from Chronicle of Higher Education showing the age and tenure of a number of university leaders. Iowa State's going to be slightly ahead of the curve by hiring one of these two finalists.
