ESPN and other major sports outlets

Don't you find it pretty amazing that after Thammel submitted his piece regarding congressional interests in athletic conference realignment late last night/early this AM that ESPN or no other major outlet, other than the NY Times has given it any cover???

Many conspiracy theorists on other forums feel that ESPN is driving many behind the scenes discussions regarding realignment.

I can only imagine what the discovery process in litigation would uncover regarding TV execs and their collusion with the major conferences throughout this process...

Why would ESPN want the Big XII to go away? People with the tin foil hats on are hilarious.

maybe not the big12 to go away, but they are so in favor of this superconference idea it's ******* ridiculous, to the point where i wouldn't be a bit surprised if they are behind the scenes pushing questionable info to make it happen.

I thought it was pretty well known that ESPN and Fox are the only thing that kept the Big 12 from breaking up last year. ESPN gains nothing by the Big 12/Big East breaking up.

IF you read the Northwestern rivals board, many there think the ESPN reporting of TX to the ACC was specifically designed to derail TX/ND to the B1G...now they're reporting the OU/OSU/TX/TTU to the Pac...yet all other rumors are left untouched...

Why does ESPN only jump on rumors regarding TX????

ESPN didn't renegotiate with the Big XII last year, they only said they'd keep the current contract in tact...which enabled them to complete the LHN deal...

Absolutely. They are now driving where they can keep the LHN in tact and carve out less in negotiations with the member conference ESPN can broker TX into. So, the Pac really isn't the best solution to ESPN, but the ACC threw up a big middle finger regarding TX being forced on them...they went their own direction...then all of the sudden it's back to Pac rumors for TX...just last week...good ol Chip said no way in hell to the Pac for TX....who's driving this bus???

Two less conferences whose games they have to buy is what they gain. Sure they have to pay a bit more money to remaining conferences, but that money is a lot less than the cost of paying two entire additional conferences.

i'm just sick of the rampant speculation of which 99% seems completely inaccurate. jfc if anyone knew half as much as they talk about, someone would have seen the pitt/cuse move before they announced it.

this is just **** poor journalism/reporting, and it will be the death of college sports.

Re: ESPN and other major sports outlets

I actually just started a thread about this (didn't see this one, sorry) about how the motives during this round of alignment are cloudy at best. Last summer it was clear why people moved. I don't really the timing of the Pitt and SU jump, but at least it's obvious why they'd do it.

What the heck is going on out here?

They also lose two conferences worth of significant football inventory. So the bidding war on the rights to the "Big 4" conferences would be insane, and they'd be losing out on valuable inventory.

They don't consider the ISU/Baylor matchup as the inventory they're seeking. Of course, you're correct, they do lose inventory but they're looking for the NFL-type coverage where every game has something riding on it...playoff spots on the line!
