To those who doubted our coaching staff...

There should be no questions as to the competency of this staff. They just executed a carefully crafted gameplan to beat a team that was undoubtedly more talented. It may have taken a couple of weeks to work out the kinks, but Bolt and McFarland earned their keep yesterday. While the gameplan may not have been flashy, it gave us the best opportunity to win. That is what coaches are paid to do, put their teams in situations where they can win. I look for this to continue as the season progresses and the coaches learn to maximize our strengths even more and the players learn how to thrive in the system. Great job Chizik and Co.

There should be a thread like this for the coaches, Meyer, Shaggy, the defense, the offensive line, etc. Each of those proved a lot of people very wrong yesterday.

In that spirit, while I spent a lot of time defending Meyer and the coaching staff, I have to admit that I was wrong on Shaggy. I wasn't real down on him, but I did write that maybe the coaching staff should probably just go for it if the field goal was longer than 40 yards. They proved me dead wrong yesterday, and with that kind of strategy, we would have lost the game.

I was all over this team after the first two losses. I totally lost faith and even tried to avoid watching yesterday's game. How pathetic is that? I am now eating large servings of crow but at least I get some hawkeye on the side! Go State!

Re: To those who doubted our coaching staff...

I'll admit, I wasn't really impressed with McFarland's playcalling the first two games. Reminded me way too much of Barney ball & the conservative offenses of the past. It was great to see some new looks opened up today (five wide, etc). It also didn't hurt that Meyer played like the four year senior that he is, and made great decisions. Can't wait to see what happens against Toledo.

Re: To those who doubted our coaching staff...

I think one of the best outcomes of the game is that it proved that most of the "professional" sportswriters and talk-show hosts, all their theories, and all their wild speculation why this team lost its first two games do not have a clue what there talking about. They also served up a heaping portion of "what I'd due differently" to everyone. That just added icing to this squawk-eye cake!

    Great win Iowa State
    Great win Chizik
Great job fans that kept believing, and let this be a lesson to the ones who didn't.

I admit I was skeptical and one good game means about as much as one bad game but I really like what they did yesterday. They had a good plan and the players executed it perfectly.

Bates looked really good on the big play. At 220, 4.5, and 6-2 he is a load to cover as a fifth receive. Let's see some more of this. Better than our punting game if it is intercepted 40 yards downfield.

We have a super staff and I support them all the way. Don't expect us to conquer the world this year. Three more wins would be a successful season in my view. Toledo, and two of four from MO,KS,KAN,CU. We are the longest of shots in the rest.

Re: To those who doubted our coaching staff...

Looks like the staff has accepted the fact that we need to spread out and open up throwing lanes for meyer. He can also run then. Until we add some more weight to the oline we need not run consistently.

Looks like the staff has judged their product and opted for a more open configuration. Chose Linux/Foxfire vs Gates/IE.

Realistically, we have more talent thropwing and ctaching than we do blasting with running.

Thinking that vanila defenses and teams that sub slowly will be more at our mercy.

Perhaps five wideouts is in anticipation also of playing Texas and Oklahoma at our home turf.

Re: To those who doubted our coaching staff...

I agree. Hats off to Chizik and staff. They really stepped up and siezed a BIG opportunity yesterday. We were 0-2 and not looking good. The Hawkeyes, beat up on two really bad teams, but looked pretty good in doing it last week.

The part that I thought was most encouraging yesterday, is that once momentum clearly shifted to Iowa in the second half and they took the lead late in the game, Chizik and his players stepped up and made the plays in crunch time.

That is something that I'm not sure I saw too often with Mac.

IMO what we saw yesterday was the best formula for beating Iowa. It would surprise me if the staff believes that is "the" formula for the rest of the season.

Offensive Player of the week: Shaggy.

Special mention (SM) should go out to Chris Brown who subbed for injured Steve Johnson and then made some big plays.

SM go out to Ace Bowen tied for lead in tackles at 7 including a crawling sack.

SM go out to a fine crowd of 49.700 in attendance (about 5,000 Hawk fans).

How about Bates? Without that catch, we lose the game.

I really believe that it's not that it just dawned on the staff that they should do this. I think that they finally felt that the players were familiar enough with the new system to do it.
