Its time to Mobilize and be Heard

Its time to make sure politicians in Iowa know this is important and THEY will be impacted if they do not do everything in their power to support Iowa State. The mere possibility of losing something as simple as a Mortgage Interest Deduction while College Athletic Programs continue to profit millions and get more Tax Free donations is one example of just how crazy this has all become.

Make your voice heard, contact your Representatitive, your Senator, the Governor, Operation fill the In Box, waiting till we see what happens is too late, we need intervention now, we need politicians to believe their future is tied to the future of Iowa State University. A couple thousand emails and phone calls today would sure help remind them. Iowa senators differ on how to act in conference realignment

This article shows last year Grassley was willing to get involved, Harkin called it "mischief"

Too many jokes here, but this really does not belong in the ISU Football forum.

This absolutely belongs in the FB forum. IF, and I understand it is still an if, 4 16 team super conferences comes about, the number of AQ BCS schools drops from 66 to 64. One of those 2 schools WILL be Iowa State. The loss of revenue to a school with an athletic budget as small as ours will be more than harmful. There will be loss of revenue to the entire state.

maybe the jokes don't belong, but if you think Iowa State belongs in a major conference as I do, then I think it is pertinent as the other 100,000 opinions on here about the subject

If you want to have politicians do something that would make a difference, push for ala carte cable. Let's people vote with their channel selection.

Harkin had a point last year when he pointed out that Republicans -- especially the new "Tea Party" wing -- have been crying about "limited government", the need to drastically reduce regulations and such, and now many who call themselves Republicans want this same government to step in and do something about the changes in college sports.

There, now does it belong in the football forum?

    Take your partisan douchebaggery elsewhere.

While I realize that your economics understanding is like that of a two-year old, everyone else knows that a government sanctioned monopoly or cartel is the most permanent and difficult to displace. Perhaps it is beyond your comprehension, the relevance here, but many of the institutions here are public, and all are supported in some manner by public money.

Justcynn's post here was perfectly appropriate.

Yours here was just the opposite. It reflects a lack of self-awarenesss on many different levels.

This is an interesting point. Senator Harkin maybe correct that the Government should not be dealing with this issue, but they have NO business in my health care decisions either and they sure as hell stuck their foot in that door. With all that said this issue is of enormous financial consequences to the State of Iowa.

Earlier on ESPN Beano Cook stated that the NCAA doesn't have the authority to get involved in realignment, I disagree! If the 4-16 team Superconferences happen the number of AQ schools drops from 66 to 64, while the other 56 D1-A schools have NO shot at a National Title. We know for the most part those schools don't now, but this would make it official.

If the Super Conferences happen we will be on the outside looking in. We are not getting invited to the ACC, SEC, or PAC 12(16) and the B1G will take Mizzou, Kansas, ND (leaving another school out to dry), Louisville, Cincinatti, West Virginia before they look at us.

Re: Its time to Mobilize and be Heard

Congress is involved in MLB, Congress appropriates money to the states who appropriate millions to public universities, Congrress gets involved in all kinds of things, this isn't a Tea Party vs Democrat or Conservative vs Liberal debate. Brining it there detracts from the main issue, Colleges are profiting immensely and stand to profit a lot more by realigning to cut out century old participants in the game, Congress writes the tax code, Congress regulates the FCC, Congress can do a lot here, whether they will depends on how many votes and how many dollars are on the line, this is its own thread for 1) More Awareness and 2) to not run the risk of getting the most epic thread in the history of CF sent to the cave, so please save the Tea Party and Liberal Mantra and focus on the fact in 2010 there was 1 Iowa Senator willing to stand up for ISU and in 2011 we need everyone on board!

Beano's right (although I have no idea who beano is, I thought it was a fart preventer). Your champions argument doesn't hold water in the fact that the NCAA does not (and has a long history) crown a champion in football. Prior to the BCS, there could have been mulitple champions, since the 'champions' were crowned by polls. This was 'unacceptable' but the NCAA wouldn't change it because they didn't have the cajones or clout (take your pick) to blow up the bowl system. The BCS 'owns' the current FBS championship scheme and NCAA can't do much about it, unless they want to now suddenly blow up the bowl system. That would get government involvement as well when the bowl locations' representatives start sniping about the impact on their economies. The only thing NCAA really does for football with regard to championships, is set up the rules for who's in FBS (Div 1-A) and who's FCS (1-AA)

Re: Its time to Mobilize and be Heard

    Sorry if I came down too hard on you earlier, Hugs4ISU . . . . . . . but think about what I said . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . and realize that there is a time and place.

If you wanted to 'discuss' things as it appeared above, in the future I would suggest that you start your own thread on the appropriate board and link to this thread. The other board exists for a reason.

I have no interest in that.

But I wanted to post here again so as not to detract from justcynn's purpose in starting this thread. Just as it takes time to craft a well written and effective note to a public official, it takes time to put together the information here.

Kudos to justcynn (and DarkStar) for doing that.
