Can you use a Tivo like a VCR without the service?

Saw a Rivo at a garage sale today for $15, and was wondering if you can use it like a VCR, or a DVR if you don't sign up for their services? Would like to record some games, but don't want to drop $350 on a DVR.

If cost is the issue, you can get new tivo premieres really cheap (seen as low as 80 on amazon), especially when you can remove your cable box and just use a $1.99/mo cable card plus the monthly subscription. Return your hd box and cancel your dvr service (if you have that through your cable co) and its about the same price to have a much better user experience with the tivo than a cable box.

Ive got a tivo premiere in my living room and a tivohd in my bedroom. So much better than mediacom's boxes.

As for what you can do without the subscription, im not sure, but i dont think you get any guide data, channel location\addition data may not get updated when those change, and you wont be able to do any season pass or other automated recordings. You may be able to record manually by time, and ff\rw live tv.

Spend $80 on a TV tuner for your computer. Sure, it might take a little more work to get it set up, but you can record whatever you want with that.

Very similar to a Sony Betamax.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

    Just not as cutting edge.
