HS team leads 29-0 before opponents get possession

Arkansas power leads team 29-0 before it can run a play - Prep Rally - High School*Blog - Yahoo! Sports

Sounds like how my college roommate and I played NCAA Football on Playstation.

Four onside kicks (and an apparent 2-pt conversion) to start out a game - do you think it's unsportsmanlike or justifiable?

Re: HS team leads 29-0 before opponents get possession

I read a different article that said why this coach does this... he has analyzed data that shows that it is not as risky of a play as most think. Plus he rarely punts. He's not doing it to be a DB... he does it because he's a stat geek.

If they know the onside kick is coming, it really is not that DB a move.

Re: HS team leads 29-0 before opponents get possession

It would appear that the leading team here was expected to come away with an easy victory, based upon their ranking in the top 100 in the nation. I personally, and I'm likely in the minority here, don't have a problem with this tactic being used early in the game. Now if they were up 29-0 and throwing out the onside kicks there is where I draw a line and we have a problem. If you have two varsity programs out there and you have a 'close' game than I have no problem with it, like I said above it is when you have a blow out and you are still running tricks that I draw the line.

Exactly. Sounds like someone didn't watch film. Also, after the first onside, you can't consider it a surprise anymore.

Don't confuse hope for a plan.

The coach doesn't do it to be DB or anything like that. As isucyfan stated, he does this based on a studying the risk/reward of attempting an onside kick. Here's an SI article about the game a little bit about his methods: Pulaski Academy scores 29 points before opponent touches football - Scorecasting - SI.com
