Why does are we slowly falling in these rankings? When I started my undergrad in 2006, I believe ISU was in the mid 80's, now were barley in the top 100.

Looks like the AAU cutoff is around 100. Every Big 10/Big 12 school on your list in the Top 100 is in the AAU except Baylor. Every school from 101+ is outside the AAU except Kansas.

Probably because we are. Decreasing state support (sadly one of the few things it seems both parties are ok with) year over year is diminishing the school.

This breaks down how they do the ranking (though not as detailed as one might like)

Iowa State University | Rankings | Best College | US News

Easy to see a few places where we'll have fallen due to decreased state support
-# of full time faculty (more use of adjuncts)
-Classes with less than 20 students
-Classes with more than 50 students

Others are stuff that hurts us as a state school, but also hurts pretty much all state schools
    -Fall 2010 acceptance rate
    -Student Selectivity Rank
    -SAT/ACT 25th-75th percentile

No idea why "High School Counselor Score" is included, but at least this isn't like some surveys that include stuff like online surveys on ratemyproffesor.com and 4 year graduation rates. However, there are a lot of things that seem redundant in ways that cause things like larger class sizes and admitting most students who apply to ding us multiple times rather than just once. Regardless though, ISU needs to make something happen before we fall out of the top 100. Too bad we aren't in the CIC. That would probably be worth a few places just by itself.

Looking a little closer, it's obvious they don't exactly exhaustively look into the university - for example the "Online Programs" portion only lists stuff in Family and Consumer Sciences despite the fact that Iowa State has a very robust online engineering masters program.

good point. with all the extra revenue the state is bringing in, we should increase support.

You might have a point, if the universities werent taking financial hits during the good times too. Theyve taken an extremely disproportionate share of the cuts over the last decade.

Re: US News & World Report - College Rankings 2012

I've never been a big fan of the way US News does their rankings. Or did their rankings. I wasn't about to pay to find out their recent change in methodology. But I do remember that "perception" and "reputation" seemed to play a disproportionate role in the rankings. I think money in the form of endowments also played a large role. But that could have changed.

Re: US News & World Report - College Rankings 2012

An interesting stat that may only be interesting to me. There are 12 states with multiple public universities in the top 100 and Iowa is one of them. Pretty impressive given our size.

California has 8, Virginia has 3, and Michigan, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Texas, Ohio, Iowa, New York, and Colorado each have 2.

The AAU is more concerned with research dollars awarded and publications, wheras these rankings are more about quality of education offered. Not that the latter isn't important, but ISU generally ranks much better when just considering the quality of research being conducted.

Based on the criteria, the US news rankings give very little weight to the actual quality of education being provided, and much more to opinion and spending/giving.

The following are elements in the US News rankings.
    • Peer assessment: a survey of the institution's reputation among presidents, provosts, and admissions deans of other institutions (15%)
    • Guidance Counselor assessment: a survey of the institution's reputation among approximately 1,800 high school guidance counselors (7.5%)
    • Retention: six–year graduation rate and first–year student retention rate (20%)
    • Faculty resources: average class size, faculty salary, faculty degree level, student-faculty ratio, and proportion of full–time faculty (20%)
    • Student selectivity: standardized test scores of admitted students, proportion of admitted students in upper percentiles of their high school class, and proportion of applicants accepted (15%)
    • Financial resources: per–student spending (10%)
    • Graduation rate performance: difference between expected and actual graduation rate (7.5%)
    • Alumni giving rate (5%)

And Nebby is the lowest by 20 places ranking in the Big ten. Football must have been the determinant for their entry.
