Coach Herman on "Out of Bounds"

Just finished to listening to Coach Herman being interviewed on "Out of Bounds" with Andy Garman (KCCI). He was asked a question about Jantz now being the leader of the team...Herman explained that he is definitely the leader but not like Peyton Manning...he is very laid back...but gives the team a sense that they are never out of a game. I gotta say, that is how he has played. From a traditional viewpoint when we went down a touchdown in OT...I was thinking crap we blew this opportunity...yet we came out and made plays and acted like we expected to win...very refreshing change.

Jantz has certainly started to establish a belief that he will make good things happen when he gets out on the field, and if he can continue to do that, you can't put a price on the value of it. When the team truly believes that, it can make a huge difference in the way they play and the effort they give.

For some reason once it rolled to the 2nd OT I felt like we were gonna get a big stop by our defense.

On that 4th down in the first OT, I felt like somehow he would get it done. I haven't felt that way about a QB in a long time. He can just get it done.

Re: Coach Herman on "Out of Bounds"

For the first season in a very, very long time I feel like we have a shot at winning games and not blowing leads. As ISU fans we have been conditioned over time to "wait for the other shoe to drop". I think that Jantz has the whole team believing that we've got a shot right up to the last second of the last overtime.

Jantz definitely has pure ice water pumping through his veins. I think the fact that we have such a cool customer at the helm this year may be making just as much a difference in the offense as his actual skills.

Ok, probably not, but it is helping quite a bit.

Re: Coach Herman on "Out of Bounds"

After the 2nd 3rd and long completion at the end of regulation, I felt we would win. Even thru the 3 overtimes, I had a confidence in our team I can't say I ever had before - even during the Seneca years.

This group feeds off Jantz in a HUGE way - in all 3 phases.

That said, Jantz is just one player and there were a ton of guys on our roster that made huge plays and were great leaders for the team to get the W.

This season could very well crumble and we finish 2-10. Regardless, for 2 games, our QB and team were clutch when they needed to be. Looked very bad for most of the opener, but from the 4th quarter of week one thru OT #3 - wow, I don't know who these guys are but I'm damn glad they're wearing the right colors.

I agree, it was a very strange feeling that we were going to pull this off, even in the fourth down situation.

It may sound strange but one of the reason I thought we were going to win was when, I think in the first overtime, that KO was 15 yards down the field pushing an Iowa linebacker all over the place that I knew we were up to the task.

It was fun to watch us do to another team what has happened to us over the years at the end of games.

A bunch of us in our section noticed that too. It was pretty awesome/hilarious to see. The guy playing the most hurt was perhaps giving the best individual effort down the stretch.

I hope that play was mentioned on TV/radio too. K.O. is a beast and I hope he gets healthy - for our sake and for the next step of his career. I'd LOVE to hear one of our guys called up to the podium in the first round of the NFL draft.

I saw that too and agree. If he has that much energy left we're in good shape. Iowa's D-line looked exhausted.

"blowing leads".....Now lets all be honest here, U-Must be talking of the Jim Walden (never come from behind jimmy) Years and also the early McCarney years...look up Oklahoma Gary Gibbs/ John Blake and KState Bill Snyder for reference.

All average football teams blow leads even including some remarkable U of I teams of past vintage...Like Last year against Minnesota and also other big ten teams...

I agree that this current Steele Jantz led team may lose a lead but.. This team will get said lead back and most times will win the football game.

Time to turn the page and realize that this is a New Era a Cyclone Football...

Re: Coach Herman on "Out of Bounds"

I really liked Herman's demeanor on the show. He seemed very upbeat and confident. I could be mis-quoting, but think he let it slip that "we have a chance to be good."

It was very unlike when I heard him last year -- he seemed tired and unmotivated. He could have been under the weather or something but ...

I'm pretty sure that was Micah Hyde (that KO was blocking) and he was not happy about it.

When I saw that it reminded me of the first game Michael Oher plays in 'The Blind Side' when he blocks the lineman down the field and out the back of the endzone. Apparently such blocking is just as amusing in real life as it is in the movie.
