    Wal-Mart

Went to buy groceries tonight at Wal-Mart. I was happy when I walked in and saw that Tostitos had special Hawkeye Displays set up all over the store. I don't know if they had Iowa State ones in Ames, but these were obviously custom done by Tostitos.

Either way, I was happy that it made me smile and not be ****** off. They were taking some off it down and one guy said to the other one "we look pretty stupid for having this up after they lost." I laughed again.

Frito Lay only has a couple around Ames, but they push the Hawkeyes hard. My brother works for them and they try to actively push the Hawks hard in the store. He's not complaining though, since nobody "likes the Cyclones", he walked away with 2 I-State tailgating tents because "nobody would want them".

Dude, it's WALMART! Of course their customer base is heavily weighed towards hoks!

No matter what, I could NEVER cheer for Dirt and Urine.

The way it works with retailers is that Frito-Lay tries to sell them new programs in order to gain extra space in store. Unfortunately in this business it gets pretty tough to get regional with your programming, so you have a situation where the retailer says "Yeah, we'll take that Hawkeye signage," but then slap it all over Iowa indiscriminately. This is almost always a top-down approach and not actually the responsibility of each individual store.

I wouldn't be surprised if FL favors the Hawkeyes, but it wouldn't stop them from being smart with their money. If they could have their way, I'm sure their signage/packing would change in every market to fit the most regional team.

Any time you see anything in store, if it's something you object to, honestly the retailer is usually to blame more than the brands. They fight the toughest of competitions to get more space in store, and will give the retailer almost anything they ask for. In fact, it can result in giving retailers programs that actually contradict the message/branding the products run nationally, because that's what the retailer wanted, and ultimately they are king.

This past Saturday I was in the Wal Mart in Storm Lake and there was an entire section of ONLY Iowa and Nebraska stuff!!! The more I looked I may have seen 2-3 items that were Iowa State in the entire store. I was flabbergasted!!! Then I thought of the clientele that shops there and it seemed about right.

So what were you doing in there if you were shopping there? Looking for women?

    Re: Wal-Mart

I must be the only one who doesn't care what schools are displayed in a business. If it has what I need...at the right price...and isn't out of my way...it could be drenched in black and gold and I wouldn't care.

But it is kind of funny (and sad) when I read stories of guys who actually took the time to call or email a business to complain about a Hawkeye display or waitresses wearing Iowa stuff.

    Re: Wal-Mart

I don't understand why some of you get so up in arms about this stuff. There's a hell of a lot more Iowa fans in this state than ISU fans. Why is this so difficult to understand and why does it get you so bent out of shape?

I don't worry about it-I just vandalize the display and the product.

Wal-Mart does appeal to the lowest common denominator so it makes sense.

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.
