    Prepaid Cell Phones ?

We are cutting our bills to save money as my wife will not be working anymore after our child is born in January. She only uses about 20 mins a month on cell phone. Yet we pay about 60 dollars a month for it. So yeah it is a total waste.

Does anyone have any experience with prepaid cell phones ? I have been looking at trac phone. 400 mins for a year was only 100 bucks. That seemed like a hell of a deal but I am not sure.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Re: Prepaid Cell Phones ?

Virgin Mobile has 300 min/month with unlimited data and text for only $35 per month. Up until several weeks ago, it was only $25 per month, but they raised the rates for new customers (current ones were grandfathered in). Biggest issue is it uses Sprint network with absolutely no roaming, so look at the coverage map before choosing them.

For occasional use and no data, t-mobile pay as you go is great. If you pay by the minute only, after you put $100 on the phone all airtime purchased after that point doesn't expire for a year. Minimum airtime you can buy at once is $10, so after the first $100 you can keep the phone active for a minimum of $10 per year (but only if the phone isn't used much, of course).

    Re: Prepaid Cell Phones ?

I use tracfone, as a I rarely ever make phone calls, and use it as more of a texting service. If you only use 20 minutes or so month, tracfone may be right up your alley. Also, if you get a tracfone, get a "double minutes for life" phone. It will say right on the package if it is a double minutes phone. Basically, every time you buy minutes for your phone, the amount is automatically doubled. So, the 400 minutes for $100 automatically becomes 800 minutes for $100.

This is the phone I have:

TracFone | Prepaid Cell Phones | Prepaid Wireless

If you get the Samsung T404G, it comes with triple minutes for life.

TracFone | Prepaid Cell Phones | Prepaid Wireless

Another nice thing about t-mobile (compared to tracfone and virgin mobile) is you can use any tmobile phone or unlocked gsm phone on it. Tracfone and Vrigin Mobile require you to use their phones only.

    Re: Prepaid Cell Phones ?

    T-mobile prices:

    $100 card = 1000 minutes (10 cents per)
    $50 card = 400 minutes (12.5 cents per)
    $30 card = 160 minutes (18.75 cents per)
    $10 card = 30 minutes (33.33 cents per)

If you are a gold member (at least $100 in refills in the past) then you get 15% more minutes on the $10, $30, and $50 cards than listed. A $100 card makes you a gold member, so the 1000 minutes already includes the 15% bump.

I use and have converted a couple of people to page plus. You can use an verizon phone and you can get 2000min for $80 at callingmart.com.

The coverage is pretty good since its on verizons network.

they are awesome if you are selling drugs or committing other crimes.

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.

    Re: Prepaid Cell Phones ?

I use net10, $.10 a minute. A $30 card has 300 minutes and 60 days of service, basically $15 a month. I've used it for a few years now, worked out very well for me.

    Re: Prepaid Cell Phones ?

I find the prepaid market both amazing and confusing.

    Virgin
    Virgin "Paylo"
    Verizon
    TMobile
    TracFone
    Net10

I've been staring at the rates, limitations, coverage, ups and downs for weeks. Any and all advice in this thread will not only help the Original Poster, but others as well.

Maybe I'm too tied up in the details, but I'm having a tough time making a decision. I want to be able to throw a couple hundred bucks at a phone and have it work throughout most of Iowa. I don't need a ton of minutes, but I'm willing to pay for them. I don't need texting but if it is included it will be used sparingly. I don't need internet or a camera thing.

I realize some of the pre-paid minutes expire. That makes a decision complicated.

    So....

Keep throwing those opinions out there, please. It will help ISUFAN80 and others as well.

    Thanks!

    Re: Prepaid Cell Phones ?

Actually, I've been using a tracfone for the last couple of years and it works pretty well if you don't use lots of minutes. My company just issued me a brand new iphone 4 and I ported my number to it (Verizon) so if you want my old phone ... its yours. I think all you'd have to do is register a new number on it; not sure how that works but if you're in the DM area and want it; send me a PM. Its a moto phone about 2 years old and in really good shape (trafones are nothing special; not the smart phones most people are used to).

Also my sister uses NET10 which is run by the same company but uses a different plan. She likes it.

    Re: Prepaid Cell Phones ?

One side note: your wife is using ~20 min. in your family's current situation. Having a child could easily mean more phone/text time, wanting to send photos, etc. I understand the "wanting to save money by not paying for what we don't use" idea, but be aware that things can change differently from what you think now.

As for the discussion and comparison of various companies and plans, carry on. I've been interested in the topic, too.

    Re: Prepaid Cell Phones ?

I use tracfone. I have double minutes, so $20 gets me 120 minutes that are good for three months. Comes out to less than $7 per month.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I bought a tracphone last night for her and should be here in a few days. Thanks again.
