    Un-UofI type game calls

One of the things I took away from the game was the a-typical calls by the uofi staff:
1 - Blitzing: don't usually see uofi blitz as often as they did towards the end of the game

2 - Changing the d-line: I don't think have ever seen uofi change the whole d-line in the middle of a series like they did in the 4th qtr yesterday

3 - Trick plays: How often does Ferentz call trick plays? I think I saw 2 of them yesterday.

I think ISU really had them befuddled yesterday.

Seeing the two trick plays made me more confident. They hate bringing that stuff out, and it shows in their execution.

    Re: Un-UofI type game calls

Can't tell if blitzing is something new for this year, or special just for ISU. I have a feeling it is something we could see more of (considering most of our opponents will run a similar style offense, I think)...but after we still didn't get sufficient pressure/let guys through with poor tackling...

Changing the D-Line is something I read we were going to do more often this season, even before ISU. Last season's winded DL seems to have motivated it, along with less overall talent for the starting DL (compared to last years).

Trick plays are uncharacteristic...and it's one of those where running the reverse was the extent of it. Fake field goals, fake punts, etc aren't something common for KF and Co. Sure, that helps with the element of surprise, but I feel they don't work on it nearly enough for it to work when we try. /Shrugs

Trick plays aside, I'd like to see some risk taking with regular play calling before we try a Statue of Liberty.

1 - We generally don't blitz that much. A lot of times when we play agile QB's, we tell our DL to do more of a controlled rush, in order to contain the QB. If you ask me, unless we are playing a far inferior team, it really takes away our aggressiveness and gives opposing teams way too much time to throw. I assume the blitz was in an effort to try to get Jantz to make a mistake...we're also big on dialing it up in the red zone.

2 - There is a more concerted effort (it seems, in hearing the staff talk in the offseason about games last year where our DL appeared tired) to get a rotation of players into the game. The 2nd half at NW last year really magnified our issue...NW runs a no-huddle spread and Persa and the NW offense ran 50 2nd half plays. Our DL was so tired by the end that on some of the critical plays in their final drive, our guys were on the sideline sucking wind.

3 - We ran both of those trick plays last year. The end around was an all-too-familiar call that O'Keefe liked to run when Paul Chaney was still at Iowa. It was about the only thing Chaney did...he was a track guy so we'd pound the ball up the middle, then swing Chaney around on an end-around. On that one your backside DE played it PERFECTLY, so that play went nowhere. I think I've only ever seen the McNutt reverse pass twice before. Last year when we were blowing out MSU we tried to throw that to DJK...incomplete then too. I think we also tried to throw something similar in the 2006 Alamo Bowl...I didn't like the playcall in either situation.

I noticed the blitz too. You almost never see that come from Iowa. I guess losing Clayborn was a bigger loss for them than some of those other stud d-linemen have been in years past.

The blitz told me they were on edge.

The trick plays told me Iowa was desperate.

I don't know how, but ISU intimidated Iowa down the stretch, and I think it started in the trenches!

Iowa will blitz late the game to catch you off guard, or at well timed play. I expected to see Iowa blitz late in the 4th and OT.

I think the trick plays were a response to our aggressive nature on D all day long. The reverse didn't work because we played aggressive and smart all day.

Iowa was owned in the trenches .... more like pwnd. They had to throw the kitchen sink at Jantz, he was killing them all day.... they needed to try and rattle him, it clearly didn't work.

One more note; our corners played a fantastic game.... near perfect.

    Re: Un-UofI type game calls

I told my wife during the game that if I see Iowa go for it on a 4th down then armagedon is officially upon us.

Things I did that I never see them do:

    1. Run an empty set
    2. blitz
    3. Run a trick play (they ran 2)

I also told her that I could pull out my VHS film study tapes from 98-2001 (when I was playing) and you would see them running 80% of the same stuff they did back then. Same formation and all.

This is what Iowa does when things are ideal for them. It's like a called shot when things are working. But by the end of the game, we had no choice but to blitz if we wanted any chance of getting pressure. That's a sure sign that a Parker defense is in trouble.

One of the trick plays was a designed pass I believe...
