    One MINOR complaint

Don't get me wrong, I'm extremely happy right now. But what's the deal with the read option? For it to truly be successful, doesn't the quarterback occassionally have to run out of it? Jantz ran a lot today, but I can only think of maybe two times that he ran out of the read option and both were in the 4th quarter. I'm not saying he needs to run more, but wouldn't it be more condusive to just run more straight run plays if Jantz isn't going to be a concern on the read?

If the right read is to hand it off, you do that.

    Fair complaint.

That being said, it's called a read option for a reason - Jantz is going to base his decision on whether he's going to hand the ball off or keep it and run it himself based on how he sees the defense line up on the line of scrimmage (there was a thread on it several years ago and I'm too lazy to go searching for it). If Jantz wasn't running a whole lot on the read option it means Iowa was lining up the defensive front in a way that Jantz was going to read "hand off" every single time.

Right, I understand how the read option works. I guess to me, to run it and give it to the running back is kind of akin to calling a play-action pass for every passing play.

True, but if he goes against the read and keeps it anyway, he runs into the teeth of the defense. You run the play the way it was designed.

    Re: One MINOR complaint

SJ rushed for 6 ypc today. They ran it fine. If the DE stays home to contain the QB on the backside, hand it off. If the DE crashes to the RB, QB keeps. There's no reason to run it any other way. You don't have to keep anyone honest because you make the DE wrong on every play. Obviously there are defensive counters to this, but Iowa never seemed to effectively employ them.

Iowa's DE's stay home and try to contain the QB. The zone read worked very well because that is where Shontrelle got most of his yards and he really was able to slash through the defense at times.

If you can't understand the concept that you end up running into the teeth of the defense by contradicting what the read tells you to do, then there's no use arguing. If the defense is going to line up all day such that the read tells you to hand off, then you hand off all day. It's as simple as that.

Even in a give situation the defense still has to account for the QB...if the DE crashes with no regard for the QB, the QB pulls it and runs. He faced DE's that were coming upfield most of the day...thus an automatic give read. If you want him to run it on a play that looks like zone read, you better have a plan for the backside DE; otherwise your QB is going to be in for a long day (anytime you that play, anyway).

    Re: One MINOR complaint

There were several plays where it was obvious the better play would have been to keep it. We had the outside sealed off, and there was a lot of room to run.

However, it still may be the case that the appropriate "read" in those cases was to hand it off.

There is no reason to argue since the thread was finished after that first post that I quoted.

Its not the way the defense lines up, its the way the unblocked defender (usually the d-end) reacts to the play. The qb is reading whether the d-end crashes or keeps outside leverage and bases his decision to hand off or run based on that read.

Personally one play I would like to see more of is the speed option. Very difficult to defend, one of those plays that allows the offense to flood an area with more blockers than the defense can put a hat on.
