    Looking at iowa

HawkeyeNation was nice enough to put up a (ahem) scouting report on Iowa.

MMQB with Jared Clauss | Hawkeye Nation

Some things I got from it:

    1. The defensive line isn't as skilled at the pass rush as a year ago.

    2. Their offensive line wasn't overpowering.

    3. Depth at running back is questionable.

    4. Lots of speed in the back seven.

    Anything else?

    1. The defensive line did seem a bit more sluggish. We were able to get in the backfield, but as for chasing down a QB it wasn't as aggressive as years past.

    2. The OL did a great job when TT wasn't stacking the box. When that started to happen, the run wasn't as effective.

    3. When Coker fumbled the second time, you could feel a little frustration from both the coaches and the rest of the offense. It's a little early to think that he's going to struggle this season, but you can bet that he'll be under the microscope against Iowa State. Expect multiple RBs to play on Saturday.

    4. Our pass defense seemed to pick up from where it left off last year. I was really impressed with our corners and safeties, even against a cupcake. The LB corps picked it up too. It will be an exciting game between ISU's pass offense and our pass defense.

Who plays now after Coker with Mccail done for the year?? I did laugh with Coker's 2 fumbles every Iowa fan I know references him as their savior this year, power runner have to have the skill to hold on to the ball......

I think their O-line is solid. We have to play tough in the box and watch McNutt and their tight ends underneath.

Their D-line isn't nearly as imposing as last year. Jantz's mobility could be a difference-maker if he's "on". I think it's his game to win.

I'm guessing it will DeAndre Johnson, he tore an ACL his senior year of high school and then redshirted last year. I don't see them pulling the redshirt off of Jordan Canzeri yet and will probably let him bulk up a little, he came to Iowa at about 180 lbs but can run like the wind and I think they want him a little heavier to withstand some hits.

Got to be honest - and this is coming from someone who has watched this series since it was brought back in '77. I could not care less about this game right now.

Tennessee Tech is a pretty bad FCS team. UNI is a FCS power.

I think that we have a lot of improvement to make if we are to beat the Hawks. But a 34-7 win over Tennessee Tech is not impressive IMO. They are not a good FCS team. I actually think that Jantz will be much improved. And the O-Line play as well. We were missing 3 starters and their subs did not perform as well as I would have liked against a veteran UNI team. McNutt concerns me. As well as DB Shaun Prater. He is good.

Yeah, either DeAndre Johnson or White would be my guess.

I've always said that you learn less about your team after the first game than before. It's safe to say that neither Iowa State nor Iowa played up to expectations, whether it was injuries, suspensions, weather, etc. This makes Saturday's game all the more interesting IMHO.

    Re: Looking at iowa

My best guess as to Iowa's #2 RB....either Damon Bullock or Jordan Canzeri. Both are freshmen. Bullock burned his redshirt last week, Canzeri didn't play so he can still keep his, but given the McCall injury, & the Iowa injury history at RB, I have to think both will play this week.

DeAndre Johnson still seems a little bit tentative to me after his ACL surgery & Jason White is serviceable, but he isn't an impact RB. I heard rumblings that Bullock really impressed the coaches in camp, and they moved him from RB to WR simply to get him on the field. That was with the assumption that McCall was going to be the #2 though, so now it could be back to square one and Bullock could move back to RB. Here are the highlight tapes on both:

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0ODXDNylRE]Jordan Canzeri 2010 Offensive High School Highlights - YouTube[/ame]

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3BIgUq8NSI]2010 Damon Bullock Senior Year Football Highlight Film Recru - YouTube[/ame]

I'm pretty confident that one of the above two guys will end up the #2 RB behind Coker by years end....not sure which one it will be though.

As for Iowa's OL - the only place it looked bad was Matt Tobin (LG), who was starting because of injuries to both Brandon Scherff & Nolan MacMillan. As long as Scherff can get back this week, I expect Iowa's OL to look VERY good. Reiff, Ferentz, & Zus looked like All Big Ten type OL to me. Gettis (RG) looked OK. Tobin looked straight up terrible. I hope he doesn't have to play again this week.

83% of Cyclone fans are betting Iowa to cover the spread. I suppose if the betting line was up, >95% will have Iowa to win. Maybe someday we'll have a team we can believe in...............

Canzeri is fast, but small. If he does play this season, we'll be scraping what's left of him off the sidelines before too long into the season.

    Re: Looking at iowa

I just can't see how this game is going to be even remotely close. Ben Bruns was pretty much saying on the radio during the game it's the worst offensive line play he has seen in college football yet. Can the coaching staff get the offensive lines head out of their *** in time to play Iowa? Thats the real question. "FCS POWER" (i laugh at that) UNI was getting through the line with ease our line couldnt even push them a yard off the line of scrimmage. Imagine what Iowas d line is gonna do to us? Hell they will only have to bring three players and do just fine against us. Put a QB spy on Jantz and make him throw the ball and things could get really ugly for us. We better be hoping for a repeat against nebraska a few years ago in order to make this one close.

White is listed as #2 today on the depth chart. If I had to guess, I'd say White, Johnson and Canzeri all get touches. Bullock was in the slot against TTU.
