Actually, that is just the penalty for the players not the school. The NCAA has not handed down the school's penalty. That investigation will take longer as it will need to determine "who" knew what was going on on staff.

Re: So it looks like Miami is getting off way easy.

You really should read the article itself:

The joint NCAA/Miami investigation into Shapiro’s actions as a booster from 2002 until 2010 remains ongoing.
These punishments doled out by the NCAA are just against current individual players that took benefits. Harsher penalties against the entire football program is still forth coming.

Sounds about right. These guys take thousands of dollars and get off with a few games. Dez Bryant hangs out with Deon Sanders a couple of times, and commits no NCAA violations - gets suspended for a whole season.

Did you happen to read the article? It spells out in their how much extra benefit each player got and that amount that they will have to repay. There was only one player who received more than $1000 and he is getting a six game suspension...

Actually, this isn't right at all. The NCAA has a tiered structure that determines how many games a player is suspended based on the value of gifts received. A couple of hundred dollars equals a one game suspension, $500 equals a 3 game suspension, $1000 equals a 5 game suspension, etc. Those aren't exactly the numbers, only ballparkish, but it gives you an idea as to what the tiers are. To say each and every player received thousands of dollars of gifts simply is a false, unfounded generalization, especially when the scandal is about 72 players over the course of 8 years. That's roughly only 9 players a year.

And as others have previously said, this is not an institutional punishment, this is a player punishment. Kind of like how Terell Pryor was rung up for 5 games long before OSU got "rung up". Miami's punishments are coming - the NCAA is still investigating. I'm not saying the NCAA isn't going to find a way to slap their wrists, but this is just a thread of unfounded complaining.

As a Miami fan I am happy with this outcome for the current players. I also think it foreshadows that no death penalty will be handed down after the rest of the investigation is concluded.

While it can be debated if player sanctions are too strong/too weak/just right, I do agree this is telling that the death penalty will not be given. Miami may still be in the NCAA doghouse for awhile (seems to be a little crowded these days), but will be playing football into the future.

How much do they have to repay for hookers? Fair market value?
    The NCAA is a joke.

Re: So it looks like Miami is getting off way easy.

As many have said, this is just the player punishment. I'm sure the NCAA put a rush on this so that the only innocent person in this whole mess, Golden, would be able to figure out who he was going to be able to put on the field this week.

    1. Bryant was not suspended for the whole season.
    2. Bryant was suspended because he lied to the NCAA.
