The opposition was successful on 68% of 4th downs? Not a chance there buddy. There is a difference between 3rd and 4th downs

Probably on the 4th downs they went for. Punting doesn't count against your conversion rate only attempted conversions.

If I face 5 4th downs in a game, punt 3 times, go for it twice and convert once my 4th down conversion rate is 50%.

The sad sack stat should see a quantum improvement this year. We finally have a bigger defensive team with a small blitzing LB in the works. Lucky we have the bookend LBs to plug the middle so that the third speedy LB can blitz.

    Re: Interesting stats from 2010

ISU has been dead last in the conference in terms of % of stopping 4th down attempts the last 2 years. Next to last in 08. Thanks to "Chizik yards", opponents didn't face too many 4th downs in 08. With the personnel on defense this year, I expect that percentage to drop.

Whats crazy is that teams attempted 36 4th downs on Tech last year(converted 19). Hard to imagine teams going for it 3 times a week. Houston went for 8 vs Tech. ATM only went for it once. Every other opponent on Tech's schedule was going for it 2-4 times.

That Tech defense was truly terrible, especially if coaches just said F-it lets get this 4th down that many times. I highly doubt there were a ton of late game attempts against them. I'm thinking 2nd/3rd qtr attempts.

Funny you mention some of those stats...I detailed a couple of them and a few others recently:
