Economically great for both schools, and so much fun.

Someone is quite welcome to post the beating dead horse .gif after what I'm saying here - as I've said it a few times this week...

The loss of the ISU-Iowa game would leave a void for both programs/fans that no other team they can schedule could replace.

Re: Cy-Hawk Football / For or Against

Lets try something different. Some history maybe.

Beating a dead horse is an idiom which means a particular request or line of conversation is already foreclosed, mooted, or otherwise resolved, and any attempt to continue it is futile. In British English, the phrase is usually rendered as flogging a dead horse
The first recorded use of the expression with its modern meaning is by British politician and orator John Bright, referring to the Reform Bill of 1867, which called for more democratic representation in Parliament, and which Parliament was singularly apathetic about. Trying to rouse Parliament from its apathy on the issue, he said in a speech, would be like trying to flog a dead horse to make it pull a load. The Oxford English Dictionary cites the Globe, 1872, as the earliest verifiable use of flogging a dead horse.

Re: Cy-Hawk Football / For or Against

I think the Cy-hawk series is just as much, if not more, about the people of this state as it is about the teams on field. It is about the kids growing up who are just learning how great sports are. It is about inspiring Iowa high school athletes. It is about bragging rights. It is about the retired folks at the coffee shop. It is about the farmer listening out in the field on the radio. It is about all of the alumni spread out all over the world.
Traditionally, around the NCAA, rivalry week is later in the year. A few years back, because of the unfortunate happenings on 9/11, we played at the end of the year. That game was very intense, and had a whole year of build up. The main reasons for not keeping "The Big Game" at the end of the year was the fans. Tailgating is better earlier in the year with a better chance of good weather. Another reason was for the teams. Ultimately, the AD's at both schools want both teams to be successful. Playing at the start of the season gives the losing team a chance to bounce back and still reach their goals for the year.

The ISU/UI game is great. The atmosphere is awesome inside and outside the stadium. This is one of the games i always look forward to.

I think it should continue, but some fans or the media should be muzzled.

I am for it because it is good for the state of Iowa. Both schools would be fine if it didn't happen.

People on both sides would miss playing this game. Although as a fan, I'm almost happy when this game is over for the year. I'm not sure why I feel that way, but I do.

I feel the same way for some reason. In a way, I would rather ditch the football game, and keep the rest of 'em. The football game is the only one that, for some reason, hawkeye fans feel entitled to a natural win. I don't hear the "All to lose, nothing to gain" argument for any other sport. Even though one game could cost a team an NCAA berth.

Re: Cy-Hawk Football / For or Against

As a Hawk fan, I like the series. The financial issues are beginning to skew some people's opinion. Both fan bases would be worse off without this series. It's nice to have an ongoing rivalry where each side despises one another. That's just a good rivalry. I couldn't imagine FSU not playing Florida, Alabama vs. Auburn, Miami vs. FSU, Georgia vs. GT, etc... rivalries are awesome, esp. in-state rivalries.

Hopefully the financial issues get resolved and fans can just focus the game itself.

As someone who hates iowa and everything they stand for, I love the series. There isn't anything sports wise that has given me the joy that I feel watching us beat iowa.

Re: Cy-Hawk Football / For or Against

It is all just pen*s jousting, barta wants to prove he actually has one, so he is going to stand up to pollard for a second. And then he is going to realize he needs this series just as bad as ISU does, and they will make a deal. This series is not going away. The only way it ever stops is if ISU joins the big10 or Iowa joins the big 12 south.

15 straight wins will do that to a fan base, even though that run ended almost a decade ago and we've won 66% (6/9) of the matchups since then, including running off 5 straight. That's why the rivalry's become so particularly nasty - we've put question into that mental thought of entitlement and superiority - something they've proven they can't handle well.

Re: Cy-Hawk Football / For or Against

What's the deal with those Hawk fans that want to drop the series? Are they embarrassed to be Iowans? Seems they want nothing to do with the rest of the state.
