Arrow Iowa State to the Big 10 (everybody better have a good read!)

    LINK
I Just couldn't believe what college football news had put out!
Forgive me if this has been burried in another thread, but this article I just found out around the lunch hour today. Seriously, have a good read!

(...No one really wants Iowa State, and it’s not a great fit for the Big Ten, but it’ll be an easy fit in the same division as Iowa, Minnesota, and Missouri. )

Thanks for the info. But the author sounds like a lot of posters here giving their opinions with not a lot of substantiation. Albeit he is much more articulate and has a better vocabulary.

Re: Iowa State to the Big 10 (everybody better have a good read!)

This is buried in the 3000 posts of speculation in the A&M Thread and I found it no more interesting than every other talking head speculating on the subject. Since there is a chance others will read this thread - I repeat the belief the longer the B12 is in Limbo is a huge issue for Iowa State to remain in one of the Power Conferences. If TCU and Utah and Others keep getting promoted, that is less spots available if and when it finally does shake out. So in a way, if it is all going to crumble, let it be now - otherwise we all have to hope for more than 64 teams in the Superconference Scenario.

How are we not a fit for the big 10? Land Grant school + AofAU + Large research institution + Geographic boundaries?? Just cause we have stunk at FB for a few decades....even so we are certainly at least on par with indiana, purdue, illinois, minnesota. They all suck too.

No. Minnesota and Illinois have national titles. Illinois was in the Rose Bowl 4 years ago.

ISU is a much better fit for the Big 10 than Nebraska if you do not factor in the football history. It is all about money, and the Big 10 is not interested in adding another weak program with an average fan base, which is exactly what ISU is.

TV sets, my friend. The Big Ten already holds Iowans' TV sets. ISU adds nothing financially, which is unfortunately the driving force behind all of this. Outside of that factor, Iowa State is a TERRIFIC fit. But it's kind of like a Corvette with an empty gas tank.

I wish the Big Ten would overlook that, and add ISU anyway. But it won't happen.

It's not so much a question of sucking or not (although ISU football hasn't really helped their cause in the past few decades), it's the fact the Big 10 already has all the TV sets in Iowa for the Big 10 network due to the Hawkeye's membership. ISU wouldn't add value to the Big 10.

There's an EXTREMELY slim chance ISU ever ends up in the Big 10, due to location & academics. There's a far greater chance that they don't. You can forget this, it's likely never going to happen.

Re: Iowa State to the Big 10 (everybody better have a good read!)

I think Al agrees with me here (correct me if I'm wrong, Al) but ISU to the Big Ten is not ridiculous if super-conferences happen. There are only so many programs who bring them something that don't fit geographically.

Name four more teams who they could add that will actually bring something. I bet you can't. Some seem to think that adding East coast teams is the secret but it's not. The East coast, especially the NE is a pro sports territory. Pitt is a fit. Outside of that, I don't think there is a surefire team to add. Maryland doesn't add much. Syracuse may add a little but they aren't, IMO, going to bring more money than ISU. To me, there's two categories: People who add money and people who don't. One or two add money and the rest don't.

You gotta be kidding me. Minnesota's last NT was in 1960! Illinois was good in 2007 but they are 15-22 since then.

Re: Iowa State to the Big 10 (everybody better have a good read!)

IF, And its a big IF there is public outcry that the NCAA is all about money and leaving historic, academcially sound land grant univiersties behind and IF, the Big 10 powers decide the hell with adding teams that make it harder to win conference championships and it makes sense to add ISU for lesser sports for travel costs, then yes there is a chance. the assumption of the powers dictating this consolidation of power and money assume no one cares about the little guy, Our best strategy is to win as much as possible while we have time, Mens Basketball becoming a national program could help a lot, Football is hard to rewrite history but IF there are 4-5 years, having a winning record in those years will help too. Upgrading facilities helps. Looking, acting and winning like a program that belongs will help to be part of the money grab when the dust does settle.

But can't the bottom feeders and middle teams of other conferences fill in the with the "Big-time" schools and make everything balance out, even if it means moving some of the Bigger money makers around a bit? How soon can this super conf. talk actually go into effect?

Or is this just a classic "the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer) thing?
