Looks like Franklin is getting noticed

Hasn't been in Tampa Bay long but it seems like he's been making a good first impression. Hope to see him get some good PT against the Patriots.

Bucs newcomer shaking things up at tight end

There was an unfamiliar player making plays in the passing game today at One Buc Place, and it turns out his coaches noticed.

Tight end Collin Franklin, who the Bucs have acquired off waivers from the Jets, took the field and -- from first impressions at least -- looks like he could make things interesting with Tampa Bay.

Franklin, an undrafted rookie from Iowa State, caught the eye of offensive coordinator Greg Olson. With rookie Luke Stocker still out with a hip injury and unlikely to play this week against the Patriots, there are some practice reps to go around. The Bucs also are hoping Franklin's arrival puts some heat on the remaining tight ends beyond Stocker and starter Kellen Winslow, creating more competition.

That means players like Ryan Purvis, rookie Daniel Hardy and Nathan Overbay. Coaches haven't seen enough consistency from that group that essentially is battling for the No. 3 tight end spot. Now, it seems, you can add Franklin to that list.

Franklin, 6-6 and 256 pounds, made several nice catches in today's workout despite being completely new to the offense. If he manages to do that against the Patriots on Thursday, he could be a player to watch this preseason.

Still think he has the best chance of anybody from last year to play in the NFL.

He is good and I hope he makes it. The Jets already had some good tight ends, but if he is on a team that has TEs that do not hustle, he may make it. Very dependable.

When you're 6'6" 250+ and agile, how do you not get noticed? Franklin will make it, he just has to put in the extra work because nobody outside of Iowa have heard of him.

he is one of those players that when you watched him last year you thought how could this guy not make it in the NFL.

He went undrafted because he was WAY underutilized in the offense. IMO, the ISU offensive coaching staff is directly to blame for that. The guy was frequently open and our most consistent/reliable receiving threat.

Franklin led the team with 54 receptions which is 19 more than the next closest receiver. How is that being underutilized?

    This ^^^^

If there was featured receiver in the offense last year it was Franklin. No one else came close to being as productive.

Apparently he should have had every catch in the offense.

Don't confuse hope for a plan.

Apparently being second team all conference, behind all american Michael Egnew is being underutilized also. Wait, that's WAY underutilized.

    or perhaps the QB?

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.
