    Google Buys Motorola Mobility

Google SHOCK! Snaps up Motorola phone biz for $12.5bn • The Register

I wonder what this deal will do to the future of the Android phone business. I imagine this will help Google in the ongoing legal battles.

They want RIM as well. Curious to see if that ever happens. RIM is gonna tank, so it seems right.

Here's a good story on what Google plans to do with the acquisition of Motorola:

They had to. They need some mobile patents to fight Microsoft and Apple.

I am pretty sure this was the driving force as well. I have to imagine this will really improve on what motorola is offering in phones and tablets too. Might even begin to see a Motorola chromebook.

My guess is that Google doesn't want to become a major competitor of HTC and all the other companies making android phones. Buying Motorola really is about the patents. My guess is that they spin off the company pretty quickly once they sort through all the patents and paperwork. They still hold onto the patents and make money from licensing, but aren't put in a position of being in direct competition with the manufacturers who use their software.

What i hope they do is force manufacturers to follow by example in some areas. Software updates for instance.

That would be a provider problem. There is no reason for Verizon not to have pushed Android 2.3 to my droid 2.
