Insurance companies paying for experimental surgery is a bugaboo for all including the Mutual of Omaha and Blue Crosses of the World. He is one of many for whom there are not too many good answers.

He must not hate Ames too much as he is coming back for the Iowa game this fall.

I think he loves Ames, but that's not the point. It's heartbreaking to read this story and it's awful that there are idiots in Ames that would treat anyone like that.

There are idiots everywhere.....unfortunately even in Ames. For those that are still there: if you ever see or hear about this sort of behavior, do something about it. This goes for the rest of us too, wherever we are.

    +1
My minimum expectations for ISU student-athletes are: they work as hard as they can and don't disgrace ISU by doing stupid things. Regardless whether they end up becoming starters, backups or even third-string, they will earn my respect.

    Can't believe these idiots.

Re: Hiawatha Rutland article from bradenton.com

Not to minimize his injury...it sounds horrific, and would feel bad for any ex-ISU player who is struggling...but, did anyone catch this line:

Southeast head coach Paul Maechtle said ISU officials later told him that Rutland had the worst injury in the history of its football program.

Uhhh....pretty sure the guy the stadium is named after had a worse injury.

No one should ever be harrassed whatever the circumstances. It is tough enough to do well in life without stupids piling on.

Re: Hiawatha Rutland article from bradenton.com

I am an Ames resident and that **** pisses me off. I've met and hung out with Hiawatha a few times. A buddy of mine from high school that walked on to the team was good friends with him and he was not only funny but always nice. It's too bad there are idiots, who probably weren't all from Ames, that would do carp like that.

Embarrassed for Ames if that is true about the people harassing him.

Much more embarrassed that we're the only wealthy nation on Earth where things like this happen. People need to get out of their little corners of America and travel to open their eyes to reality. It doesn't have to be like this. We're too wealthy and powerful a nation to handicap our young people and destroy families over a sickness or injury.

For the pro business crowd, nothing stifles entrepreneurship and small business ventures like being locked into a job due to health care fears. Again, we're the only wealthy nation where this is the case. In every other developed nation people live without the fear of being bankrupted by getting sick.

That sucks that the NCAA is acting that way, but that is how the world works. My dad has been through the same thing multiple times and has even had to resort to suing worker's compensation until he got his money.
