I will believe it when I see it somewhere else. If this really was a big discovery, this news would be everywhere. Cool idea, but call me a skeptic.

That sounds very cool. I really wish I could have been smart enought to come up with this stuff.

In 100 years we will be ******** about destroying our world's oceans, then someone will figure out how burn something else and we will consume all of it.

I think research into any of these ideas is great. They did call it a "novel" idea, which doesn't inspire a lot of confidence, but who knows?

That's inevitable. Eventually people will consume all of the resources of the Earth and leave it in shambles - it's part of survival. Eventually humans will find another planet to inhabit and start the process over again.

Re: How long before big oil squashes this one?

I actually like this quote from The Matrix. I find it to be quite accurate if you really think about it - although the virus thing is a bit much:

"I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet."

You know, that is almost an exact quote from enviro-terrorist organizations. I would have to strongly disagree.

I would also strongly disagree. The distinction between humans and all other forms of life is that we can conquer nature. The very fact that humans can live in places like Iowa is just another sign of the greatness of consciousness, which seperates us from all other animals. The fact that we can use what we find to create something new is amazing, and to be celebrated.

Back on topic; I'd also take offense to the comment about oil companies killing the technology. The more correct statement is that oil is ridiculously inexpensive compared to other forms of portable energy and will continue to be even if prices continue to rise. The only thing that is narrowing that gap are subsidies for new technologies which are incredibly inefficient by comparision. I hate to harp on ethanol, but it actually takes more energy to produce the stuff then it yeilds when burned in an automobile. Were it not for the redistribution of wealth and politicians falling all over themselves to proclaim their love of the stuff, ethanol wouldn't exist outside of moonshine stills.

Re: How long before big oil squashes this one?

Let me clarify, by NO MEANS am I siding with the enviro-terrorists! I just think it's interesting to think about the future of the Earth(much later than my death).

Also, ekim121 you have a valid point as well about the cost of oil. It will be up to the consumer some day to give up cheap costs of oil for a more earth-friendly solution.
