    IOWA STATE

    The safe bet: Jerome Tiller. Tiller, a junior, has filled in for Austen Arnaud much of the past two seasons, but struggled late last season after Arnaud suffered a season-ending knee injury. Tiller quarterbacked a win at Nebraska in 2009, but didn't look much improved in the game time he earned in 2010.

    The wild card: Steele Jantz. Jantz is a speedy transfer from junior college in California who also arrived at Iowa State with his top receiver from the City College of San Francisco, Aaron Horne. Jantz will have to keep learning the offense, but can he inject life into the offense with his legs like Taylor Martinez did for Nebraska? Iowa State's version of The Decision is set for Aug. 20. Who will be taking their talents under center at Jack Trice Stadium? Give me the underdog in this race.

    The dark horse: Jared Barnett, a fourth contender, transferred, but Paul Rhoads says Barnett still has a chance. Can he make enough noise in fall camp to make that a reality?

    So the guy thinks Jantz wins the job, but calls Tiller the "safe bet"? I don't have an issue with any of the content, that just seems mildly contradictory.

    The little blurb about Barnett makes no sense. Is that first "Jared Barnett" supposed to be "James Capello"? Even then, it doesn't really make sense.

    No I believe in the blog I read that it had capellos name in it and then it said the fourth one transferred

    Must have made a correction. When I first read it Capello was not listed. It was:

    Jared Barnett. , a fourth contender, transferred, but Paul Rhoads

    I'm kinda hoping Barnett shows enough to get the job but I hope it's because he earned the job and not Tiller/Jantz giving away the job.

    Someone in the know please enlighten me, in the picture shown at the beginning of this thread, is Tiller's grip on the ball correct? I was always taught to grip the laces and you'll throw a more accurate pass. Just curious..thanks.

    It's not, but it could be a picture of a quick "pop pass" where he just needed to dump it off to a receiver fast. (i.e. in "trips right/while in shotgun," one receiver could stay back to catch the pass while the other two head upfield to block...in that situation the QB only needs to catch it from the center, secure any grip and immediatly get the ball out of there.)

    Again, I hope he is not throwing it like that all the time.

    There are a number of QBs who've opted to go without gripping the laces. I seem to remember Boomer Esiason not gripping the laces, but I could be off on that. Regardless, there was a prominent pro QB in the late 80s, early 90s that didn't grip the laces. It's certainly not conventional, but guys have done it.

    Did the article bother to mention Tillers massive guns?

    Its not super uncommon for some NFL QB to not use the laces. Also I believe QBs with real big hands can throw the football pretty well without using the laces.

    based off some show on NFL network perhaps, it appears a lot of QBs hold the ball differently and throw it from all different sorts of places on the laces.
