    Re: Mike Gesell

ESPN rates him the 12th best point guard in the country. McDermott was looking at him but Hoiberg showed no interest. Some think he's a Kirk Hinrich type talent and he gets overlooked by some for not being "athletic" enough. Hinrich heard the same thing and he's been in the NBA for 8 years. Gesell will be a very good college player.

    Re: Mike Gesell

Rivals, Scout, ESPN all rank him as a top 100 player and a 4 star. Good player for sure.

Player of the year in Nebraska. Hopefully not round two of Wes Eikmeier.

When did Hinrich hear this? He was very fast and athletic. He is also a bigger guard than Gessel is, and ran the point throughout his career. Gessell doesn't run the PG on his AAU team, Paige does. Hinrich had interest from every major power in the Midwest. Gessell had offers from Nebraska, Iowa, Stanford, and Creighton. They are not the same caliber of recruit. All the recruiting sites assume he will move into the 1 in college, but he could end up like Kenny Boynton as well, as an undersized 2.

He is a good pickup, but he is not on Hinrich's level. I think he is a little overrated at this point based on the AAU season and the fact he wasn't playing his future position. No one else really came calling for his services.

It says something when Kirk Hinrich went to Kansas, and Gessell is going to Iowa.

There were a lot of people (just fans) who watched Hinrich play in high school who didn't think he would play much at KU. Gesell's coach, who had a brother play with Hinrich, acknowledges that Hinrich is bigger, but thinks Gesell's skill set is similar to Hinrich's. Gesell was one of the top high-jumpers in the nation for his age group, as an 8th grader. He may not be Hinrich but he's not as far off as you might think.

    Re: Mike Gesell

I know Freddy had some interest at one point. Our Lot pass for football is right by the basketball tent where the players (mens and womens) go to eat before games and where they entertain recruits. Gesell was with Freddy last year before the Utah game and rode around on the golf cart that Freddy was using to shuttle players around. Doesn't mean that he was hotly pursued here lately but I know there was interest in him.

    Re: Mike Gesell

Gessell is rated so highly under the assumption he'll be able to handle the point in college. The PG skills arent quite there i dont think for him though, and if he has to play the 2 he'll be limited by his size (particularly defensively). Still is a good pickup for the Hawks. I wouldnt count on him being the next hinrich though...

    Re: Mike Gesell

Good solid player that Creighton and Gmac was really counting on. Gesell's much older brother played for GMAC in the late 90's @ Wayne St, while the younger Gesell was a ball boy with Doug McDermott together @ Wayne St.

Would of been a great player for Creighton....Alas ! Mad Fran prevails
