anyone happy of the new kickoff rules?

Kickoffs are moving forward five yards to the 35-yard line this year. In addition, coverage units may position themselves no further than five yards behind the football prior to the kick.

I think Mahoney had a very high percentage of TBs last season compared to the rest of the nation. I like that. Other than LJs big day at OSU in 08, and maybe a couple other returns, ISU really hasn't scared anyone in the return game for years. I think overall its a benefit to ISU.

I think the change is just in the NFL

I'll put the NFL prefix on the thread so there's no more confusion.

Safety of players is important but they are well on their way to ruining a game the nation loves.

Re: anyone happy of the new kickoff rules?

Kickoffs are the best way to start a football game. This new rule takes away the fun of kickoffs. Either the ball is going to be kicked out the far endzone out of play or the receiving team will just kneel in the endzone for a touchback because the kickoff team is that much closer. No fun in that!

Re: anyone happy of the new kickoff rules?

so no more exciting kickoff returns for touchdowns.......

The easy prediction is that the amount of touchbacks will rise across the league. Most are expecting an increase of 5-15% from 2010.

Last season, 416 of 2,539 kickoffs (16.4%) were downed for touchbacks. Ravens K Billy Cundiff led the league by sailing over 50% (40 of 79) of his kicks unreturnable into the end zone.

Employing a big-footed specialist may be a temptation that some teams wrestle with throughout the season. The ability to decrease special teams scoring plays while increasing control over field position offers plenty of advantages. Of course, the downside would be a pair of kickers occupying two spots on the 46-man gameday roster.

Chiefs will stick with Succop and let it be how it is.....since in 2010 only a average of 20.2 yards per kickoff return last season. That total ranked as the NFL’s sixth-best mark last season.

I don't think this will have quite as big of an impact as people think. You'll probably have slightly more touchbacks, but I doubt it's so many that it's close to a problem.

Re: anyone happy of the new kickoff rules?

I'm not really a fan of it - it's going to give the kicking team an extreme advantage. Kickers that couldn't make the endzone regularly now now are going to, but it's more than that. The NFL has given the coverage team an extra 5 yards, so the kicking team may now just elect to kick it short of the goal line in an attempt to stick offenses inside the 20. Odds are you're going to see average starting position following kickoffs drop dramatically, and not just because of increased touchbacks, but because drives starting behind the 20. You're probably also going to see far fewer kicks returned for TDs.

I'm willing to see it play out, but on the onset I don't like it.

Not allowing the kicking team a 10 or 15 yard running start will have some positive impact on returns though, I think that will partially offset moving the ball to the 35.

It's not like this is something entirely new. They've kicked off from the 35 for more years than they have from the 30.

This. It's only been at the 30 since 1993. Before that, it was at the 35 and I don't think the game was "ruined." Much ado about nothing, imho. Teams will adjust. There will probably be a few more touchbacks. That's pretty much it. Not a huge impact.
