Things to do in Quad Cities

My wife, seven year old and myself will be heading to the State Championship for Drive, Chip, and Putt this Saturday. (Yep, proud papa) We were trying to see about doing something like a mini-vacation to make up for the long drive.

We're thinking about hitting a lock and dam, Niabi Zoo, and maybe stay at a local B&B. Any other suggestions or any of these to stay away from? We will be driving over from Ankeny, so anything along the way.

    Get ice cream at Whitey's.

They also have a water taxi on the Mississippi River that is fun to do.

Le Claire to the American Pickers shop. It's not much and super crowded (on a Saturday), but some of the stuff is kind of cool to look at.

The zoo is a good idea for kids.

We like the Filling Station just off Brady Street in Davenport. Never had a bad dining experience there. Pork tenderloin is pretty awesome.

If you weren't with kids I'd recommend sandwiches at Belgian Village in Moline. A neighborhood bar atmosphere but sandwiches are unique, good, and huge. Known for the Reuben sandwich which literally is the size of a flattened basketball.

Arsenal island has some cool architecture and history. Not easiest of access, and hard to do a self tour.

I also recommend Whitey's for ice cream. The turtle sundae is tops.

No matter what, I could NEVER cheer for Dirt and Urine.

Whitey's for sure. The zoo is probably good, as is the Putnam Museum.

Bar crawl it on the Loop. Night cap it at one of the casinos at a high dollar Pai Gow table.

May have to get the son a fake ID for the excursion.

Re: Things to do in Quad Cities

    1) Whitey's Ice Cream...put it down as a must

    2) Niabi Zoo - great place for the fam, a lot more than you'd expect for the QC area

    3) Water Taxi - quick, fun, and pretty cheap

    4) John Deere Pavillion in Moline - Kids never get tired of climbing up on the tractors and combines on display

    5) Le Claire - Like someone else mentioned, American Pickers' shop is there but also a lot of other really nice shops. Nice and laid back with great views of the River (side note: they also have the Buffalo Bill Museum there, has some interesting history stuff and it's not all about Buffalo Bill)

Tons of other stuff to do as well, but I'd put some of this toward the top for a more "family friendly" visit.

Re: Things to do in Quad Cities

Great german food @ the Bier Stubbe on 16th I believe in Moline or the original in the East Village in Dport has more character, but smaller. While in downtown Moline check out the John Deere museum, my kids got a kick out of climbing up the combines.

+1 to the king size Vandereuben @ Belgium Village, must have whenever I go back to visit friends along with the Whiteys.

They remodeled the ballpark after I moved, but a river bandits game was always fun to go watch to kill an afternoon. I'm sure it's even better now, any improvements are better than it was.

That rug really tied the room together, did it not dude?

The Family Museum in Bettendorf would be good for a family...check out their site at familymuseum.org to see if it would be suitable; primarily designed for kids under 8 yrs with their parents. Stop for Harris Pizza just south of the Museum on 18th Street. Another vote for Whitey's Ice Cream and the Water Taxi! Oh...and there is River Bandits baseball Saturday night at Modern Woodman Park, game starts at 7 p.m. and fireworks after the game!

Doesn't Leclaire also have the restaurant that has all the cut off ties hanging from the walls?

The Jolly Roger on the Illinois side is a great spot for dinner.
