Texas (LHN) making pitch to Texas Tech, Oklahoma State

Nine things and one crazy prediction

Texas, and ESPN, apparently really want that second game on the LHN:

The Longhorn Network's hopes of televising live high school football games remain on hold for at least a year, but ESPN still would like to show a second Texas football game besides Rice this season. The network's representatives have approached Texas Tech about the possibility of showing the Red Raiders-Longhorns game this year, and to make it worth Tech's while, discussed showing other Tech games like Nevada and New Mexico over the next four seasons for $5 million, a high-ranking Big 12 school administrator familiar with the negotiations told me. So far Tech has declined. The next probable school ESPN would approach Oklahoma State, the source said. He also said the broadcast of high school games will happen eventually.
Can you imagine, especially if you were a Tech fan, having to watch Texas Tech vs. New Mexico on the LHN? Sounds like Tech is saying no, and I'm sure Okie State will as well.

I bet Baylor is next on Texas' hit list to hit up about this game, followed by us and the Kansas schools. Question is, will anyone take this offer?

I don't know why they started with TTU and OSU - wouldn't you start with the smallest budget schools first and then work your way up. $5mm is a lot of money for small budget programs (ISU included). Glad to hear TTU has said no and I hope all follow their lead.

I also hope everyone doesn't sign up for the LHN and if you aren't given a choice make sure you pitch a huge fit.

What if they come to JP with this deal?

A cool $5 mil to show ISU-UT on the LHN.... Mediacom or someone can get Iowa broadcast rights... and more ISU exposure in the state of Texas showing our games against some non-con opponents (looking into the future, Tulsa and Toledo) - again with broadcast rights in the state of Iowa belonging to someone like Mediacom.

Would he say no? COULD he say no? Damn, it's $5 million.

They went to texas tech first because they want to get the LHN on in as many texas markets as possible. If texas tech fans and texas fans are pushing cable providers in texas to add it, their chances of getting a deal done go up.

Getting ISU on? Adds not much. Mediacom is never, ever, going to carry the LHN in Iowa. Not for one game a year that anyone here cares about.

If this is true, they started with the schools that fit the geographic target area for ESPN to release the LHN: Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico (TTU v. New Mexico game), and Arizona(?).

Yeah if they somehow can convince Tech to say yes, that would be a big boost for LHN in Texas. If the Baylor game was in Austin this year, I'm sure they'd be sweet talking Baylor as well.

According to Shaggybevo, Dish Network is going to put it on their sports pack (which I have) so I guess I totally wouldn't be bent out of shape if the game down there in 2012 is on LHN...especially if Texas is going to open the pocketbook.

Everyone needs to say no to this. It's a can of worms that can under cut the 2016 tier 1 contract. Plus it sticks it to Texas.

    Just say no.

    This.

Is it all confirmed that any cable or satellite provider has signed on to pick it up yet?
My biggest question is how far has thing gotten off the runway so far?

Re: Texas (LHN) making pitch to Texas Tech, Oklahoma State

not that Texas would offer Iowa State a comparable deal as there would likely be little gain to them and the mothership, but IF THEY DID, standing on principle does not pay the bills. Pollard would be a fool not to take the money and get the exposure for our program in Texas and then allow Medicom or some other entity buy the rights to simulcast the feed. In my mind, this just reaffirms the fact Texas is going to keep pushing until those with options have had enough and when that happens, we can do little except wait and hope for the best. Kind of like the kid that always gets picked last in pick up games, nothing that kid can do about it other than try and get better and have more to offer to the captains that get to do the picking. Sad but true fact is college football has become solely about the dollar and there just aren't enough dollars available in the Marketing of Iowa States product and market to be a decision maker in this process and that is why it would be foolish not to take the money if and when the money is available.

May as well triple the annual payout and make it a Big 12 network...this is the only way it works out.

Re: Texas (LHN) making pitch to Texas Tech, Oklahoma State

One other point, a potential game changer in all of this could be the growth of online streaming. If online streaming becomes a trend that replaces cable and satellite tv based on a lower cost for a households entertainment content, the whole collegiant network model and forced royalties for the carriage of those networks lose leverage. In this sense, perhaps the rest of the big 12 needs to band together and put their efforts to creating a streaming product that sells membersips to the dedicated fanbases and then those networks could sell the feed to their local broadcasters OR, local broadcasters could produce the content and sell the streaming rights to the new Band of Nine Network, Band of Nine Network available on Hulu, Netfilx, etc. Of course this would be for the games not covered in the TV Contract which we are supposed to believe is few and far between, but maybe it includes other content like Basketball, Wrestling, etc.

As others have mentioned, this move probably is driven by geography, but revenue-wise, TTU is second from the bottom in Big 12.
