    9/11 tomorrow

I'm not sure how everyone else is, but it's been six years, tomorrow morning, since the attacks in New York and Washington. I really don't know that I have been able to look back at that day in a meaningful way for about five years. For the first year, I thought about it every day. I tried to find a way to cope with what I had seen, what had happened, and what that all meant for the world that I lived in, for the country I love, and for my son who would grow up with this new reality.

I think I have kind of buried it to a certain extent. I suppose you have to do that with such a large amount of grief. I really hadn't thought about it much, except in passing. Just small thoughts that quickly came and went. I probably even spent one or two of these anniversaries barely acknowledging the day, except in a general sort of way.

But the courage of the rescue crews that day, the police, the firemen really demand that we look back and remember fully the tragedy, and the heroic actions that occurred six years ago. And to remember every soldier, and family that have given so much to keep our families safe. So my prayer tonight is that we have the courage to look back and remember. That I have the courage to look back and remember.

    Re: 9/11 tomorrow

I know I don't really think about it too much anymore, when the war comes up though it is always something I look back on as one of the reasons are soldiers are over there, trying to make the world a better place in a far away country so that our world is a better place here.

I can't believe it has been six years, I can still remember where I was when I first heard the news. I was a freshman in high school and had just gotten to school when I heard a teacher talking about a couple of plans that had flown into the World Trade Centers and how they thought it was just some massive accident. Six years later and we constantly hear about whether an incident is terrorism related or not.

I was ¾ of a mile from the Pentagon that day, I've never had a problem not remembering it.

    Re: 9/11 tomorrow

What an awful day that was. All the rumors that were going around at that time made things even worse than what they were.

I remember a few days afterwards my girlfriend and I were in the parking lot going into Best Buy in West Des Moines. This was the first time we heard a plane since that day. No lie, there were about 15-20 other people that stopped dead in their tracks in the parking lot and we all looked up and then at each other. I will never forget that....

    Re: 9/11 tomorrow

My career took a very different direction after 9/11 - in a good way.

    Strange how those things happen.

I'll never forget that day, how I found out (e-mail from the Mrs) and the complete dismay surrounding the event. And of course, the strangers that banded together in order to help save lives.

A horrible, yet very defining day in our history.

    Re: 9/11 tomorrow

I will always remember that morning. I was on my way to my part time job in Ames when I heard about it on the radio. At first, it was reported as a horrible accident. Then there was a report of a second plane and I knew right away it was intentional.

I had to work until 2 pm, and I skipped my classes for the rest of the day so I could watch the news coverage. I still have a VHS tape entirely of news coverage from the networks that day and night.

Never forget those who perished that day. Bin Laden will get his.

    Re: 9/11 tomorrow

We need to remember this day as we go about our lives. Give thanks to those who protect us and are trying to keep us safe. While walking to the game Saturday after enjoying the super tailgating experience with family and friends, I thought how fortunate we were to be able to enjoy another football game in light of what is going on in the Middleeast. One more freedom we take for granted. Anyone know any Cyclone fans serving us in Iraq?

    Re: 9/11 tomorrow

Indeed, this will always be one of those days much like Kennedy's assassination, where you will always remember where you were and what you were doing.
Let us all take a moment to pause and give honor tomorrow to those who perished.

    Re: 9/11 tomorrow

I remember looking up in the sky that night and only seeing one lingering trail from a plane. I was thinking wasn't all of the planes grounded for the rest of the day and then I remember that the President was flown to the Army base in Omaha and Air Force One would have to fly over Des Moines to get back to Washington. That was just an odd sight to only see one plane trail and to know that it was Air Force One that created it.

    Re: 9/11 tomorrow

In the afternoon, right before school was out I remember hearing jets over head. Being in West Omaha, I later realized that this was Air Force One being flown in with F-15's to Offutt AFB in Bellevue, NE. Even being in the 8th grade, that hit it home pretty hard.

    Re: 9/11 tomorrow

What really got me emotional last night was reading an article about the squabble over whether Giuliani should speak at the ceremony today. I'm not sure who is right, and who is wrong, but it really offended me that I was forced to consider something so trivial at a time like that. There are 364 other days where people can play politics.

    Re: 9/11 tomorrow

I was living in an apartment in West Des Moines back in 2001. Flight paths from the DSM airport took planes just west of my building, so I heard about 15 or so jets fly by every night between 7:00 and 10:00. Not to mention the busy area I lived in that had a lot of cars out and about. That night, I remember sitting on my deck in eerie silence. No planes. Hardly any traffic out. I also remember looking up at the sky and seeing nothing but stars. That's what I'll never forget about that day. And at 23, I was even a little spooked to go to bed that night. For nights.

Tragic, tragic day. I hope we never see anything like that again.

    Re: 9/11 tomorrow

My niece was born on 9/10/01. 9/11 brought mixed emotions from me. I was so happy to have her in the world, but so scared of the world she was coming into.

I will never forget. I was working as a student at the Financial Aid Scholarship office at that time. We only saw what was posted on the internet. That afternoon when I took the bus home over to my apartment by the old bowling alley we had to bypass Welch Ave. It was lined with cars trying to fill up with gas. My husband worked at Hickory Park at that time. They had a moment of silence that night before work. Everyone went into the dining room and stood in silence.

I was scared/depressed for a long time after that day. It changed us all.

Just in case you didn't know... I'm a girl.
