    Help: Banff National Park

I'm planning a trip to Banff in Canada in 2 weeks and I'm wondering if anyone has been there before? I'm trying to decide whether its so busy that I need to make hotel reservations in advance or if I would be ok just walking up. I hate to be tied to a place for a few nights especially when there is so much to see. Anyone have any suggestions?

Check around, but summer is usually really busy there. You might want to look at some of the lodges or cabins between Banff and Lake Louise if they are available. You can take day trips to either place and then drive around the area. There are hiking paths near many of the cabins into the mountains. You can also easily bike between the towns. There is a train that runs through the valley too. I'd recommend a trip up to Athabaska Glacier and then up to Jasper. It's worth the trip. Also, check out the hot springs and Johnston Canyon in the area. The lake at Chateau Lake Louise is a great place to sit and have a beer. There is also horseback trail rides up the mountains nearly Lake Louise that I would highly recommend.

I'm thinking of booking 1 night at Lake Louise and 1 night at Banff. From there we should be able to have enough flexibility while still having some freedom.

    Re: Help: Banff National Park

I went quite a while ago (~15 years), but it was pretty busy. I would book in advance. See if you can do so without paying in advance.

It is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been....you'll love it. On a side note, I might have a chance to go there for work this winter!! Amazingly lucky.

Thanks for help. Spending 2 days at Glacier and 2 days at Banff with 2 days of play where-ever. Got 2 plane tickets today for $328 total using travel vouchers. I can't wait to see some mountains again!

It is unbelievably beautiful. We did a similar trip except we drove from Iowa. Went to Glacier and then up to Banff and Jasper. Consider me very jealous.

I did a similar drive tour last summer that encompassed 25 national parks/monuments across 10 states. 5,000 miles in 2 weeks. Unfortunately a boulder and a new transmission pan ended my run to Glacier and Banff. Not this year!
