    Same Umpire

The same umpire that threw out Molina last week for balls and strikes threw Alex Gordon for tossing his bat. Alex tossed his bat after he thought it was ball 4 on a 3-2 count. (According to FoxTrax it was ball 4) I can't find the replay on ESPN or anything, but what does everyone think a replay for balls and strikes? Or replays at all?

I am all for the replays. Anything to make the umps feel some type of accountability. IMO the umps chests' are getting puffed out way too much. I understand they have to stick up for themselves but it is getting out of control.

I hate the idea of replay for balls and strikes. It is easily the most subjective aspect of officiating in any sport. It would be somewhat akin to having replay for holding penalties for every player in every play in a football game.

Don't get all the hate for umpires. As a baseball official myself, I understand just how hard the job is. And the way it is ingrained in coaches and fans to berate the umpires as a part of the way baseball always has been is just sad.

The same coaches and players who go to extremes on ripping umpires get all bent out of shape whenever there is the slightest public criticism of mistakes and errors on their part.

The average fan is usually clueless in regards to rule book interpretations and would probably crap their pants the first time that they got behind the dish with an 85 MPH pitch let alone 95+ heat.

    Re: Same Umpire

Replays for balls and strikes would be awful, there are so many close pitches it would really hurt the game to have constant replays every time a pitch was on the corner.

The "pitch tracker" technology literally makes home plate umpires obsolete, at least for calling balls and strikes. No wonder the umps don't like it.

    Re: Same Umpire

I, myself, am not a fan of replay on balls and strikes, but the broadcast was talking about it. I think there should be replays for home runs and close plays. (Braves-Pirates play at the plate a while back) Maybe be like football and each team only have like 1 challenge. I do think umpires need to get back down to their level. When a guy tosses a bat because he thinks it's ball 4 and turns out it's strike 3, don't throw him out.

    Re: Same Umpire

I don't understand the bravado that emanates from baseball umpires, and this comes from someone who officiates basketball. Does being an umpire mean you have to automatically be a confrontational *** hole? (Most) Basketball and football officials don't act that way. If a football official got in the face of a coach and gave it back to a coach the way these baseball umpires do, they'd be on the street.

I think they should automate balls and strikes, personally. I don't know if you've seen the replay system in tennis, but they basically combine and digitize the court from multiple angles then do a CGI replay. I think balls and strikes could be called the same way. Of course you'd have to ditch the part of the rule book that makes the strike zone different for each batter and just make a standard strike zone, but I think it could be done and quite easily so. Would probably also move the games along quicker.

And every close play otherwise should be reviewed. It's time for baseball to get with the times.

Bob Davidson is the worst of the bunch - Not for his strike zone but for trying to "injecting himself into the center of attention"

This is what makes me mad the most. This happened twice the Royals in two years. Our catchers were getting ready to go down to play and like every catcher does, he talked to the ump to ask about the play and he tossed them. Players should be allowed to vent as long as they don't get out of hand.

But you really don't know what he said, do you? Colvin could have said "That was a ****ing awful call, fat***!" and it absolutely would have been the right call to toss him. Quade could have said something similar. You don't really know.

With that said, Bob Davidson is right up there with Rob Drake and Joe West as worst umpires in MLB, IMO. Check out this video of a call he absolutely blew last year at 3rd that ended up completely changing the outcome (Phillies won it eventually):

And this one, too.... just unbelievable.
