The bad thing about Meyer's play...

is the INTs that he throws that get dropped. He had two against UNI (one that would have been returned for a TD) and one against Kent State.

I don't know what has happened to Brett in the last 2 years, but he has gotten noticable worse.

Lost his confidence and now is making mistakes. It is time to look at the future, if we do not beat Toledo, the season is lost, and we need to start building towards next year.

Re: The bad thing about Meyer's play...

He's clearly a guy without much confidence. Last year he got killed back there.

Combine that with a new system and adjusted fundamentals (they worked on correcting a number of issues with Bret) - he's just not right out there.

Would I expect him to get more comfortable as the year grows on? Yes.

Should we wait around for that or insert the young guy? I....

    *sigh*

    This sucks.

Take out the Bret interceptions, and you have 2 games that could have gone either way. Tough turnovers.

An encouraging stat: Bret Meyer has been sacked twice in two games. If the average holds, that is 12 for the season or less than 1/3 of the sacks he took last season. O-line has really improved!

disagree... while I think Meyer has stunk, and is playing at a lower level than his freshman year, if there is one thing he has gotten better at, it's avoiding getting his ***** planted into the grass every play. He has stayed out of sacks one way or another (often by forcing a bad throw) and it has made our line look better. As it looks to me he's still running for his life half of the time...

I agree, I think it's the new "quick strike" passing game that's dramatically reducing the number of sacks. Last year, a lot of Bret's problem was holding onto the ball too long, and now that the new coaching staff wants him to get rid of the ball quicker, it's leading to bad decisions on his part.

I agree, the new schemes are improving the sack totals, which is a good thing, but sooner or later, teams are just going to sit on the short routes, and if we don't go deep 5 or 6 times a game to keep them honest, there are going to be some INT's for TD's.

Re: The bad thing about Meyer's play...

Meyer's reduction in sacks is just as much to his credit (if not more so) as it is the offensive line.

QB coach Petersen really worked on his a lot with him in the off-season.

3 step drop, ball out or run - no hitches!

5 step drop, 1 (maybe 2) hitches, ball out or run.

With the roll outs it's a different story, but even there the decision must be made quickly to throw or run.

This part of Bret's game has greatly improved. I just wish the rest of it would as well.

I agree but it really is kind of sad that without those INTs and dropped punts, the games were still toss-ups. Oh well, no doubt we'll get better.

Meyer gets the Iowa game as his last try in my opinion. If he can't get up for this one and pull it together, it is time to move on. He doesn't have to win to keep his job, but they need to score more than 24 points this week.

3 qauarterback coaches and 2 new systems later and it is hard for Meyer to be confident. He has regressed from his play in his sophomore season.

Amen. Each QB coach has changed things with Meyer, he's never got to be consistent with his fundamentals, which are rather messed up.

Re: The bad thing about Meyer's play...

Yeah its hard after all that change, but still excuses are like A**holes, everyone has one.

Even with all that change, he is still a senior. Sure his mechanics maybe messed up, but that shouldn't affect his leadership or game control aspects.

He doesn't step up. I remember his freshman year McCarney mentioned once that even though he is a freshman he needs to speak up and be a leader on the team. Bret said his Sophmore year during the spring that he has to step up and become a leader. Has it happened though???
