    Bears, Tatupu Have Mutual Interest

Free agent linebacker Lofa Tatupu and the Bears have a mutual interest, a source told ESPNChicago.com. Tatupu was released by the Seahawks over the weekend.

Bears assistant general manager Tim Ruskell drafted Tatupu out of USC in 2005 when Ruskell was the general manager of the Seahawks.

The bears have been very active over this past week, making what I consider some very good moves. I really like the addition of DT Omoye from Houston, C Spencer from Seattle, and now LB Tatupu from Seattle. They look to be addressing some huge needs with some decent players.

We do have Sam Hurd and Roy Williams now.. not awesome, but a step in the right direction.

I like what they've done, but the OL was the real problem last year. Spencer for Kruetz is a wash. They really need to sign one or two more to try and make the like look bearable (pardon the pun)

I really don't think Chris Williams is meant to be an interior lineman. He needs to get stockier. Really I think we're about one really good guard away from a pretty decent line...assuming Carimi pans out (which i think he will).

I know nothing of Spencer but is bigger than Kruetz at least. Not sure that translates into better or not but along the line...size does matter.

where did kruetz end up? I love that guy and didn't know he left. He would always shove people around after plays.

I think the Bears actually have decent starters, just very little depth. Webb is slotted to start at left tackle, and Tice is supposedly very high on him. You've got Garza and Williams at the guards, Spencer at Center, and Carimi at right tackle. That's not a bad line. It's definitely big. I think every one of them is over 300lbs. Omiyale is a versatile backup, and can play darn near any spot on the line, but after that, there's not much.

Last I heard, no one had picked him up, and he was contemplating retirement. Kind of strange, he played behind Wiegmann for his first few years, and Casey seems to be still going strong.

As far as Tatupu, what does everyone think?

He used to be one of my favorites when he was younger but I haven't heard much about him lately.

I know his stats have dropped significantly but he had a torn pec and lost his dad.. hopefully if we get him he picks it up

As far as stats go...they were a little better/worse than Briggs depending on the stat. Still seems very solid to me.

would the idea be to move him to Will and have him start along side Briggs and Urlacher? If he can pick up the position, that would be a very solid linebacking group. The Bears D is looking legit again this year. Okoye was a good pickup. He'll do fine as a replacement for Tommie Harris.

That is the speculation. But would he want to move positions(he's a MLB now)? The bears play a decent amount of nickel and that means he'll be on the bench for a DB. I can see the Bears coveting him but from his standpoint I don't know that it's an ideal fit. Would love to have him just as insurance for #54. I really like that signing of Okoye as well. Also I think the Gholston pickup has huge upside. If he can actually use some of his godgiven talents he'd be a good pass rusher and quite a change from Izzy or Peppers. On the defensive side I like what they've done for depth.

I don't mind taking some flyers on guys like Okoye, Gholston and Roy Williams but they had some real needs that they needed to fill. They need another CB as nobody should expect what they got out of Tim Jennings again. You traded away Olsen (who I didn't like either but he was a hot read target and a red zone guy) essentially to sign Williams who has been totally unreliable the last three years. I don't hate that signing b/c you aren't committing anything to him but it doesn't add a lot certainty to the offense.

Olin is certainly nearing the end of the line but I don't know why you wouldn't try and get him back for one year. (You are built to win now, the team isn't young.) He's a team leader and knows the offense. Bringing in a C to learn Martz's playbook and run the line in 5 weeks is a tall task. (Not to mention a busted 1st round pick who is injury prone.) Your fallback plan is a RG (Garza) that has played one game at center in his NFL career. Further complicating matters you are moving a LG (Carimi) to RG and RG (Webb) to LG, again with no offseason work under their belt. If you think it took time for the OL to build chemistry last year, just wait for this. Cutler may die.

I know that Jerry Angelo and his front office guys suck (stop listening to Tim Ruskell, he killed the Seahawks) but in my wildest dreams I never thought we would come out the lockout focusing on the TE and Punter positions. Hats off to you Jerry.

(Full Disclaimer: I was this negative last year and we ended up in the NFC Championship. This is what psychologists call a defense mechanism. I have been hurt before.)
