    Sounds like the study says starving yourself causes the brain to eat itself. Not really the same thing as "dieting".

    As a 'scientist,' I cringe when I read any article in any popular publication about science, because there is always a disconnect with what the actual peer-reviewed article says and what the common article says. They always want to jump to conclusions and extrapolate meanings that arent quite true.

    This study must be hard for skinny blondes to accept.

    It's common knowledge that when blood levels of amino acids, glucose, or fats drop below normal, the adrenal glands secrete the stress hormone, cortisol, to mobilize fats from storage, and break down muscle protein to free up amino acids, some of which can be converted to glucose. This adaptation may go on for an extended period during starvation. I would think scavenging the brain for fatty acids would be a last priority after body fat stores have been depleted. That is to say, theoretically, the heavier the person, the longer they should be able to starve without brain damage.

    Also, doesn't your brain only do this when your body isn't getting enough protein? It seems like dieting wouldn't hurt you as long as you continue to get healthy amounts of the right nutrients.

    I'll maintain that exercise is the way to go.

    your brain is about 60 percent epa and dha...suplement your diet with a fish oil pill
    with epa at 160 to 120 ratio of dha...take a pill that a doctor prescribes to you for the deficency in your diet.. use some flaxseed(ground on your breakfast cereal in the morning.
    eat a couple of meals of fish(tilophia,salmon,sardines,other decent fish) every week.salmon and sardines are excellent resources of epa and dha..
