Looks like we got "Tuba" Rubin

Ahtyba Rubin has qualified and will start practice on Monday. Under Mac's quote on cyclones.com, he says that Rubin will be on the defensive line (tackle). Now tell me how a 315 pounder is not on the o-line, i think ISU may need some much needed depth there, i am not sold on the fisher twins yet.

    Thoughts?

Well I won't be a bit surprised if Lee Tibbs beats out the one Fisher at OG here before the season starts. And the fact that our 2 NT are about 260, i think Mac wants someone with some size to "eat" up some room when they run the ball. Coming in this late, i doubt he's about to see a whole lot of time on either side of the ball, but defense is where they need him more right now.

Another body to throw out on defense during the fourth qtr? Yay!! We can use all of the depth on defense that we can get, but can you tell me if this Rubin is an athletic 315 pounder? Or is he a one too many trips to the buffet 315 pounder?

Our offensive line is huge and our defense is fast but very small. We have Tibbs or Reggie Stephens for depth on the o-line (plus Schmeling & Schober in an emergency), while on our d-line we have 2 total unknowns. This makes a lot of sense to me! I don't think there is any doubt at all that everyone is going to try to run it down our throats all year long, there is no disputing that we lack size on defense, hopefully Tuba will help in a BIG way.

Tuba's size should be an asset even early on in goal line and short yardage situations. Not much scheming involved, just dominate your gap. Beyond that, it will depend on how athletic he is and how quickly he gets up to speed.

Thank God for small miracles. We have all been worried about that nose guard spot since Leaders graduated because we didn't have any 300 pounders. Rubin had several sacks his freshman year before being moved over to offense his sophomore year. Now if we could just get Eboh back for that troubling defensive rush end position.

I believe that Tuba had always played DL up until last year when he played OL. The greater need would be at DL IMO. Braaksma can play all DL positions. We need a big body to stuff the middle. As stated, I hope Tuba is a mobile athletic 300 pounder. True Freshman Rashawn Parker will have to really step it up.

Watched some of the replays from last year on Mediacom. While I really liked Berryman's speed on the edge in pass rush situations, I noticed that Berryman had a tendency to overpursue and not contain in a lot of situations. That Kansas game was really bizarre. The refs overturned Blythe's TD catch which would have put us up 21-3 and later gave Kansas a TD on a fourth down that they originally called short of the goal and Cyclone ball. Talk about a hose job.

This should hopefully help get some double-teams off of Curvey.

I'm sure he's at least moderately athletic. I am just happy because at least we can put a big guy out there to fill some space, and allow Curvey the ability to use his athleticism and allow the linebackers to roam a little more freely and fly to the ball.

Getting more excited all the time.

Tuba solves two problems. He solves the problem with lack of size at the NG position and he solves the DE position, since his arrival frees up Braaksma to play DE in place of Taylor, and Moorehead can move to rush end. We have better depth at the interior positions now, with backups of Berg, Dale and Braaskma, who could move over one spot in a pinch.

I believe, based on the clues we were given, that the plan all along was for Rubin to play NG. The only question was if he would make grades and show up.

This is huge news IMO. We are going from potentially having an undersized DL with Moorehead & Mochado/Parker at the DE & Curvey and Braaskma at DT to having a potentially BIGGER DL then last year with 300lb'er Curvey & 315lb'er Rubin at DT & 260lb Moorehead and 275 Braaskma at the DE's.

I'll be interested to see what D-Mac has to say about him on Friday - after a full week of practice.

With 10 days until the opener, does anybody know if Tuba will play or start vs. Toledo? I suppose a lot of it depends on how practice goes.

I expect he will play, but not start. I see him coming in early after an adjustment or two to Toledos opening offensive showing.

After that, the more PT the better. basically if the current D can slow Toledo and our O can light it up, it allows Rubin to slide in more easily and take a few chances while learning.

    -keep.
