    Jim Criner

My dad and I were chatting about Jim Criner not that long ago, so I decided to do some Google research on that "era" of as it predates my earliest detailed memories of Cyclone football (1989 and Blaise Bryant).

I ran across this LA Times article from 1989 that I thought others might find interesting. It includes a lot of good information related to the NCAA sanctions that Iowa State was dealt and the surrounding drama.

Note in the article it talks about Frank D'Alonzo's role in the debacle which was my years at ISU. Looks like he was cited again at the Pitt for paying players.

Then, look what he did in his after-coaching life. Once an offender, always an offender. Dirtbag!

Yeah, I thought that was interesting. Even more interesting that Criner submitted himself to multiple polygraph tests to prove he knew nothing about D'Alonzo's actions.

    Re: Jim Criner

I think Criner was the victim of having a dirty assistant.

    Re: Jim Criner

Another thing that I found interesting regarding Criner: In the book "Here's Johnny Orr" by Gene McGivern, Johnny is asked about his relationship with the football coaches. After talking about how he "really liked Donnie Duncan", he says the following about Criner:

"Jim Criner was a different experience entirely, different than anywhere I'd ever been. I think he's a very knowledgeable football guy, but he basically tried to do everything himself. Boy, he had a lot of changes in (assistant) coaches, about 20 or so, and something hand to be wrong. I think it was like something you'd see in the movies where he thought, 'You have to win or you'll be fired.' One time I tried to explain that to him, but I don't think he believed me. That was a difficult period there."

...Sounds like Criner must have been a very difficult guy to get along with.

    Re: Jim Criner

Sounds to me like he was the most recent coach who didn't "settle for mediocrity." Win or GTFO. Many fans around here should have loved him. That's the kind of attitude we need.

    Re: Jim Criner

I remember when they announced Criner as head coach, there had been a state high school football meeting and when the coaches got back, they said that some of the college coaches there stated Criner would make ISU a winner, but ISU would be on probation within 5 years.

So if that's the case, he must have had some dirt on him coming out of Boise State. What's the story there?

By the way, are you a WL native?
