    Fukudome to the Indians

Sounds like it is about a done deal. Cubs get 2 prospects in exchange, and still on hook for a large portion of his remaining salary.

So, we managed to get something for a guy we would have let go at the end of the season? Is that for real?

Not sure who the prospects are, but its a good move. Honestly, I just made the thread just so I could post that pic.

I don't think it matters who they are.

He was a free agent after this year, so we're just paying a salary we'd be paying already.

I just can't believe that we got something for a guy we were going to let go anyway.

I like Kosuke and he is a good player, but never lived up to the size of his contract. He has been better this year. Good luck to him. Happy to see Colvin or someone else come up and get some playing time. Now if we could just move Soriano.....

If we move Soriano, I will weep with joy.

I like Kosuke's fielding and his April-May hitting. The way his BA collapses after the beginning of June is something I'll live without.

It's too bad that he had that contract. For a more reasonable amount, people would have been much less upset about his play. Outstanding outfielder in the field.

Hopefully Colvin can come back up and hit higher than .100. A little confidence going into the offseason would be huge.

Sounds like the Cubs will pay out the most of the contract, but like it has been mentioned, we get two prospects for a player that we were going to pay and let go at the end. I'm not expecting much for expected talent....

It matters. There are a few positions the Cubs really need to put focus on, mainly 3rd base.

    Touche.

I'm really torn about 3rd base. Aramis is swaying me with his contract-year push. (And yes, this makes me gullible.)

There's no reason the Cubs couldn't sign him for another three years. Even though they're likely to be rebuilding, they have no prospect at 3b that he would be blocking (or 1b for that matter)

At the very least they could pick up his option and hope to find a 3b of the future later.

Now if they decline the option and sign Pujols or Sabathia I'd be ok with that. I'd be less ok with Fielder but that would still be an upgrade. Anything short of that however doesn't make any sense.

    Re: Fukudome to the Indians

This better be the first of several trades Hendry makes. There is NO reason to keep guys that aren't in the future plans. Grabow and Pena are 2 guys that fit that category and I hope Ramirez waives his no-trade because he could net some decent talent back. I really don't see a need to re-sign him, he has been terribly inconsistent the past few years. He'll go on these hot sprees but at the start and finish of each season he seems to go cold like the weather and for a guy hitting 3rd or 4th you need a guy that will hit all year not just when it is warm out. Would be great to shed portions of Soriano and Zambrano's contracts too if they can find takers.

My stance on this team is blow it up and get anything you can for guys that aren't in the plans for the future. It's better than letting them walk for nothing. I'd rather pay most or all of their salary to trade them and get something in return than keep them which means you still have to pay them anyways and get nothing in return.

I don't think we need to waste a lot of time on a rebuild, but some of that assumes getting rid of $19 million in leftfield. Fukodome's contract is gone now, and Pena's not coming back. That should allow us to make a run at Fielder (or a dream run at Pujols).

At this point, corners of Fielder and Ramirez looks OK. There's some real production there.
Replace Soriano somehow, and then we can really make a move.

I think Aramis will be traded in August. Soriano and Zambrano will be back with the Cubs next year. If Jeff Baker is still on this team after July 31st Hendry should be fired on August 1st. He's a good role player but those players are useless on a team 20 games under .500. Get value for him now.
