Pirates Lose in the 19th on a blown call

Wow. Not a fan of either team but what a horrible way to end a great 19 inning game. I don't see how the ump can even think that he missed there. Lugo knew he was out right away and then turned around when he heard safe. You gotta think this will just make the case for instant replay on certain calls in the MLB even more of a relevant argument

You think he tagged him? I can't tell from that angle.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Meh. It's 0.62% of the total games they play.

Yeah, can't tell from that angle if the tag was made. However, the runner's reaction made it seem that he knew he was out.

Re: Pirates Lose in the 19th on a blown call

I saw this on ESPN this morning. I usually like to give the umps the benefit of the doubt, but this was a no brainer out call. It was 2:00 a.m. and it looked like the ump was missing his bed and had had enough of the game. If I were Selig I'd consider suspension on this one, particularly since he was using lack of replay as a defense.

Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this.

Re: Pirates Lose in the 19th on a blown call

Meals (the ump) had a rough night at the plate. Most of the players for both teams showed disbelief with his strike zone all night. Nate McLouth got tossed early in the fame for arguing balls & strikes. McLouth never argues, and it's been like 3 years since his last ejection. Gonzalez got tossed right after McLouth.

Definitely a night to forget for Meals - another mark in the instant replay column.

A 19 inning baseball game? I say give that ump a medal for putting everyone out of their misery.

Re: Pirates Lose in the 19th on a blown call

Sure replay would prevent that play from being botched, but do you realize how many double plays would be overturned because the 2b/ss left the bag early.

I personally like the idea of leaving the human element in baseball. There are 162 games in a season if missing a call in 1 game causes you to not get to the playoffs you need to review the rest of your season because there were larger problems that you have.

1 game is can be a big deal when you're in a pennant race.

Baseball doesn't need an instant replay overhaul. Should football adopt instant replay rules that allow you to go back and call a hold on the last play because the replay showed it? Hell no. Baseball shouldn't allow you to go back and change the game either unless it's something like a home run (like challenging a catch or trap).

Terrible call, but if I was the ump I would have done it too just to get home....

Unfortunately that is part of the human element of the game. If it happens in the 2nd inning, we aren't talking about it right now.

I just listened to the Rich Eisen posdcast last night. The NFL will review every scoring play. This will be automatic from the booth. Team will not need to "challange" the play.

If the NFL can see the importance of reviewing a score, I'm not sure why MLB cannot.

Re: Pirates Lose in the 19th on a blown call

I love baseball, but their penchant for the past boggles my mind. There are clever and unobtrusive ways to selectively implement replay. Calls at the plate being one of them. To me, there is really no excuse.

For the record, I'm a Braves fan. So this isn't just a sour Bucs fan the morning after.
