If the Welch Ave location was closed you could really open up some prime location for commercial development there.

I find it odd that Ames is the only larger city identified to have a redundant Post Office. I just can't believe places like Cedar Rapids and Des Moines don't have underused branches.

In des moines at least, almost all of the post office locations are in HyVees or Dahls. Not very many actual post offices. Anytime i need to go to an actual post office (to get certified mail or something), i have to go all the way over to 100th and hickman from 86th and ep true

The actual branches in Cedar Rapids (there are 3, I believe) always have long-*** lines whenever I need to send something.

Not sure if that is a product of demand, or understaffing, but either way closing any of those would not be a good idea IMO.

I have not heard of 3/4 of those towns. Does each small town need their own post office?

probably not. In Iowa, they've actually done away with some of the smaller routes recently. My father is a rural carrier for a very small town in northern Iowa. As the carriers for other, surrounding communities retired, they split up their routes amongst the surrounding offices, rather than replace the carrier. My dad has seen his route nearly triple in size in the last 6-7 years as he has picked up portions of other towns. These little offices are really just two man operations, a post master and a carrier. The post masters are really the only ones who can lose out. I believe they get offered early retirement or the option to transfer to other locations when the local offices close.

These are in addition to 90 or so post offices that were already being considered for closing in Iowa - including four in Des Moines (two have closed), one in Iowa City, and two in Sioux City. I put together a consolidated list on my website.

Yeah, I haven't heard of at least 3/4 of those towns either, and I would be lucky if I could find more than 5 or 10 of them on a map. Assuming that there are similar opportunities in states across the country, I would think the post office could save a ton of money shutting them down.

    Re: Potential Post office shutdowns

I agree with the South Amana, and Middle Amana, no need to have post offices there when there is a nicer bigger one in main Amana. The only thing I can think of...are these post offices have main lock style mail boxes in there, that might be hard to do.

Looks like the Haverhill Post Office is gone-zo.

Everytime I have gone to the Welch Ave post office, it is busy... I am surprised that is considered a low use location.

They might as well close the one in the MU just because it isn't ever open for service.

I think it is only ever open from 10-2 Monday through Friday. But every time I saw it open, there were no customers. This location should be shut down rather than the Welch location.

I remember it being busy too, they probably figure its demand can be picked up by more post office in another store type locations.
