    Stocks?

How many of you have stocks? What are some good tips for someone who hardly knows what a stock is? What are some good cheap stocks to invest in? How often do you sell?

I'm wanting to invest a very small amount of money into a couple of stocks just to see what they do. I have no experience with them at all, but I like to learn new things. Any help would be great!

    Re: Stocks?

I've wondered this before as well, but I bet you get way more info than you want in here.

Personally I would wait a few weeks to see if this whole government debt ceiling issue is resolved, if it isn't resolved stocks are going to tank for a while and that will be the best time to get in.

Stay out right now. The market is acting strange the past few weeks.

    Re: Stocks?

I have invested in the stock market since 1981. My advice to new investors is to research investment strategies that have a track record of being successful and pick one that fits your individual personality. Some people crave action. They may be best suited to more active trading strategies such as "swing trading or reversion to the mean". Others are more conservative. They should consider buy and hold or moving average strategies. Things like broadly diversified etf's and mutual funds. When I attended ISU, there were some good books on the subject in the library. Check your local library and research the subject. Use the internet. You may find some of the books entertaining. Some of the books are mostly fictional. Don't forget to share some of your new wealth with the Cyclones.

    Best of luck

I've been watching Tokyo Electric (they of the nuclear disaster). It'd obviously be risky given the potential liability, but it's trading at a third of it's normal price.

99% of them are pump and dumps - scams. You can make money there if you don't get greedy.

I agree, I have had a few that I bought for 40 cents or so and made a couple of hundred bucks and sold. Nothing to hold on to long term.

    Re: Stocks?

If you don't have much to invest and want limited risk you could try option spreads. I would recommend as much reading & a few months of simulated trading before the real thing though.

How long did you typically hold on to them?

Depends, I usually go 4-6 months or so. I still have a precious metals one I bought in November that I should have sold in April but I am stubbornly holding on to it.

    Re: Stocks?

    Thanks for the info.

How do I know if the penny stock is a scam or not a scam? I read that lot's of companies have penny stocks but then they buy up all of the stock to make it raise.
