Cool What has happened to our football program?

Just two years ago, in 2004 and 2005 we were a short field goal at the end of a game from the Big 12 Championship game. Now, in 2007 we are staring down the barrell of a winless season. I'm also hearing that the new coach needs time, this is a journey, he needs his own players and it is a new system. What happened in just two years? How did we get this bad? Why do we now have to be patient and allow the new staff to get this corrected? Didn't we just have it corrected in 2004 and 2005? I think the DMac era was totally overated and it finally has come home to roost!

I DO think we need to be patient. Unrealistic expectation galore on here. Look at Oklahoma State... beat the snot out of em 2 years ago... they are now supposed to be rather good... It doesn't take a long time for decent change... NOT WORRIED AT ALL.... enjoy it for what it is.... NEW ERA... just let some time go by before calling for the coaches and players head as some would already have it.

Excited we still have 10 more games this year !

How about the fact that we have an unbalanced Big XII schedule?
Those two years? A&M, OSU, Baylor
The next two? UT, OU, TT

That's AT LEAST part of the reason

Why do we have to be patient??? Because any success that comes immediately has no longevity and is gone just as quickly. Build a base before you build the tower reaching for the sky.

    I ain't happy, but I am a realist too.

according to rivals, our recruiting class ratings for the last few years: 2003-46 ,2004-42, 2005-58, 2006-63, 2007-60. we are currently ranked 57 but it is too early to tell anything right now on the current class. i expected them to be worse then this.....

We were not very good in 2004 or 2005 either. The Big 12 North has been horrible the last few years. A good team in 2005 would have won 9 or 10 games. We lost to Baylor at home that year. Go back and look at who we beat in 04 and 05, very unimpressive.

But where did they finish in relation to our conference? Thats where it counts.... Actually it only counts on the field, but you know what I'm saying. Or maybe you don't.

Re: What has happened to our football program?

With the exception of a four game stretch in 2005 (Texas A&M, Ok. State, K-State, Colorado) the offense has been extremely ordinary point wise. If you take a closer look at those four games, ISU scored an average of 38 points. However, in those four games they had a plus 11 turnover ratio...Meyer didn't throw a pick in any of the games. This offense has since 2003 been more hype than substance. The only games they have put up big numbers, with the exception of A&M-2005, are the ones in which the D has created turnovers. ISU created 39 turnovers in 2005, which was 3rd in the nation. They also were 11th in the nation in rush defense at just over 90 yards a game. The only other team in the top 15 in both of those categories was Florida.

They lost Leaders, Berryman, Dobbins, Robertson, Hicks, Moser, Paris, C.Johnson to graduation after 2005. And this year they lost Moorehead, Curvey, and D-Jack. That is a lot for a unit to overcome and their simply wasn't the talent in the system to replace them. The recruiting classes of '02 and '03 on defense were pretty much throw-a-ways.

A lot of people expected the Offense to pick up the slack, but it hasn't happened. And the D has stopped creating turnovers to help them out in the past year plus. ISU was 104th in turnovers forced last year. I respect Meyer and Blythe, but if you take a closer look at the numbers they haven't been historically as productive as you may think.

Meyer and Blythe have started 40 games in their career....ISU has scored more than 28 points only 8 times (4 of which came in that four game stretch I wrote about earlier thanks to the D and short fields.)

And ISU hasn't been over the 28 point mark in regulation since the famed Colorado tornado game in 2005, a stretch of 16 games.

So, in short, the offense has never improved enough to cover up the loss of a ton on defense. And I'm afraid you won't see much improvement in the near future. It will be a process as tough as that is to swallow.

That might be why we are #137 in Sagarin after a second loss.

UNI is #74, Iowa is #78, Kent STATE is #81, NEBRASKA is only #82 after Wake Forest close call, BAYLOR is #100, TOLEDO is #105, and Iowa State is #137 just agead of Wisconsin Green Bay. Since we have the #57 best recruiting, could our coaching have caused the slow start? Maybe we can get to #57 in Sagarin if we win 7 or 8 games? Just asking how we could be rated lower than early last year with the similar level of players.

Bottom line and all kidding aside, we should have won one of two home games. Unless we can see better recruits, our short road to success is to commit no errors on the field. QBs throw interceptions but special teams are some of the lousiest in the country at this point. And that is the truth. Just look at the special teams for our two last opponents.

Re: What has happened to our football program?

Our team's demise is the lack of play on the d-line and the decline in Meyer's play. While the O-Line is equally important, they need time to develop starting a frosh, 2 sophs, and a d-line transfer. We start 2 seniors on this poor d-line, that doesn't bode well for our team. I say Braaksma and Taylor start giving way to guys like Bailey Johnson, Chris Lyle, and maybe even guys like Jerrod Black and Randy Kellman.

My wacked out theory on why we now suck is based on one player...Tony Yelk. If he plays to his potential with that huge leg, makes that Alabama kick, keeps placekicking, no Mizzou or Kansas misses, 2 B12N championships, etc. etc.

    Its all chaos theory..

Re: What has happened to our football program?

    Our best players in priority?

    1. Allen Bell
    2. Ace
    3. Blythe
    4. Bass
    5. James Smith
    6. Jesse Smith
    7. Sumrall
    8. Tuba
    9. Singleton
    10. Barkema.

How many oline and dline players are mentioned in the 10? Meyer, Brandtner and Frere were honorable mention.

This would make a great topic for discussion.
