My biggest concern regarding the qb situation

is that we're going to have fans going all Iowa on our starting qb regardless of who wins it. If Jantz wins it (and I think he will) and has a bad outing against UNI, we'll have a significant portion of our fan base pulling for Tiller to start against Iowa. It would work the same if Tiller wins the spot in camp and plays poorly against UNI as fans would clamor for Jantz.

I'm hoping that by scrimmage #2 this fall coach R. comes out and says one of the guys has clearly distanced himself from the competition. I would think that would buy whomever is named starter some time to get acclimated.

I wish that would happen - but I'm willing to put money down right now that a starter won't be named until just before kickoff against UNI. The only way I can see avoiding the Tiller vs. Jantz discussion is if Barnett wins the job outright.

What do you expect if the qb struggles against uni?

I expect a realization that the coaches have watched hours upon hours of film, been at practice, been in team meetings, been in individual position meetings, and watched interactions with teammates before making the decision as whom is the best man to start to give us the best chance to win.

It's gonna happen unless the starter vs. UNI goes 25-30 with 4 TDs.

Didn't you see/hear all of the talk about Tiller last year?

If that if our starting QB has problems at the UNI game, then I think we are in for a long season.

Re: My biggest concern regarding the qb situation

What if they all play? If they choose to switch it up when one is turning for the worst, would the fanbase be as anxious when they see what each can and can't do? I wouldn't want this, but if you are worried about people turning on one guy when they have a bad turn of events, the only way to really combat that would be to have them all show what they can do.

For me, I think it is going to be one guy at the end of camp...a clear 1-2. I won't question it unless the wheels absolutely fall off somewhere, because the coaches know best. I would say, don't worry about all the apocalyptic posters that will come out of the woodwork when something goes wrong. Also, don't be that poster.

My money is on Jantz right now, but if Tiller or Barnett win out you just have to believe that they are better off and they didn't win without some stiff competition.

Re: My biggest concern regarding the qb situation

I think it is pretty clear the coaching staff does not want Tiller to start. This should have been crystal clear when a JUCO QB was brought in. Tiller has all the advantages of being in the system, knowing the lingo, knowing the players and actually playing BCS games but he still cannot separate himself from the pack. This does not bode well for him.

I am not calling Jantz the next Seneca or Cam Newton, all he has to do is be average to a bit above average and ISU can ride the D to a bowl game. If the offensive output from the last 5 years continues this will be a long season.

I tend to agree with this sentiment.

When do they choose captains for this season? Has that been done?

I would bet money on Jantz being our starting qb this season.

Re: My biggest concern regarding the qb situation

If I was Rhoads and had it in my mind Jantz is definitely the guy, I wouldn't make that known until a week before UNI. Especially now that Capello has left the program.

Same with Tiller if he's shown Rhoads honest improvement..I would want him to think Jantz is right on his heels and make sure Jerome does't take his foot off the gas at all.

I laugh when outsiders go crazy over the fact Jantz was not named the starter after spring practice. Rhoads and Herman not only have to decide who the starter is, but they also have to manage the egos and personalities of all the QBs. If Jantz was named the starter back in April, who here thinks Tiller would bolt out and transfer elsewhere?

Based on some comments Tiller has made back in April, I have my suspicions he may look to transfer if hes not the starter.

Well one of our potential starters has struggled against UNI.

11 for 22 for 87 yards speaks for itself against arguably one of the worst defenses we faced last season.

Re: My biggest concern regarding the qb situation

We scored 1 offensive TD against UNI last year. Of course we should worry about scoring against UNI this year.

Our biggest concern with the QB position is if nobody runs away with the contest. That means they are all equally pretty cruddy.
