Someone New to Ames needs suggestions

A friend of mine is moving to Ames in August, and was asking me if I knew anything about the internet/phone services there. I told him no.....but I knew a place I could get some suggestions.......CF.....of course.

So.....the landloard provides the cable with Mediacom but he will need high speed internet (he has both a desktop and a laptop), and landline phone services. He already has T-Mobile for his cell phone. He works at home from his computer, so the ISP has to be the best

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

If he can get 7mg or higher with Qwest (get the landline thru them as well), do that. If not your stuck with mediajunk.

Would not argue with the internet through Qwest, but I would use ISUNet as my ISP. That way if and when Qwest has a problem, ISUNet can tell you what is truth and what is ********. Qwest loves to avoid taking the blame for anything so they can nail a customer with a service call fee of $85. ISUNet is also really good at helping customers with tech issues.

I might have to try that!

I do know if you have an alternate ISP it is a little more than Qwest's ISP provider (who I believe is MSN).

What do you pay ISUNet a month? If you don't mind me asking? 10 bucks or so?

My dad works for Iowa Telecom/Windstream. He can get you hooked up if your landlord doesn't have contractual stuff with mediacom. PM me if you are interested and I can get you his contact information

I like ICS for internet -- **IF** you have line of site. They use wireless from your house to their towers so you have no transport cost.

Otherwise -- Qwest should be fine.

May my postings be polite and not misunderstood. (And hopefully funny on occasion.)

I thought I heard that Qwest dumped MSN and is now providing their own ISP now? Could be wrong, but I swear someone at work was ******** about not being able to get all the free storage on their msn account anymore.

Qwest does not use MSN as their ISP anymore, they are their own ISP.

I wouldn't wish Iowa Telecom on Al Quaida. By far #1 with a bullet on the avoid list.

Re: Someone New to Ames needs suggestions

Doesn't sound like anyone is too high on Mediacom. Do they offer phone, long distance and Internet too? I'm just wondering because the cable is with them through the landlord, so maybe he will get better pricing with them......or are they that bad, and Qwest is that much better for Internet especially. Good Internet service is critical to him.

Re: Someone New to Ames needs suggestions

Mediacom is a dirty word around here for some reason, but for all intents and purposes they're fine, all ISP's have issues. And they'll generally be much faster than any Qwest package you can get since the areas that can actually get the high speed Qwest deals are very limited.

Re: Someone New to Ames needs suggestions

I had mediacom and other than the occassional hickup of cable tv I didn't have much of a problem.

One of the last years I had them in my apartment they actually gave us more than we signed up (DVR and movie channels) and when the hammer came down 8 months later we weren't happy. Although, they only charged us an additional $10 for the DVR and still gave us 3 months of movie channels for free because of the hassle we had to go through.

Is the hatred of Mediacom primarily because they don't broadcast enough ISU basketball and football?

Re: Someone New to Ames needs suggestions

Ok........here are the prices quoted to him.

Mediacom......Internet, Local Phone and Long Distance..........about $80 per month
    Internet Speed.......12 Mbps

Qwest......Interent, Local Phone and Long Distance........about $65 per month
    Internet Speed ..........7Mbps

So, if Mediacom is that much faster, I would think it was worth it....unless they are really bad with service......thoughts anyone?
