Am I the last to know about this? DirecTV MediaShare

Have you guys set this up yet on your home networks? I didn't even realize DTV boxes were capable of being used as media sharing devices until I read it on one of their tech forums. You can stream music, videos, pictures to any TV/home theater system in your house. I'll never burn another disc again!

    Here is the link: [Cached:22:14:42-22:34:42]Home

All you need to do is go into Windows Media Player and enable sharing. You can then tell it which folders to point to for photos, videos and music.

Then reset your DirecTV boxes. After that when you hit menu you will see a new option to view photos, videos and music on your home network.

I have tons of home videos on my PC and most of them I have no idea where the original DVDs are. Now I can view them on my TV without needing a disc. It's great.

Mine aren't wired so I'm assuming you need a wireless adapter for this?

How old is your setup? Newer DirecTV systems have a "SWM" that attaches to a router, then DTV splitter which feeds internet to all your DTV boxes via coax. This also allows all your boxes to network with every other Windows 7 PC on your home network.

I signed a new contract last year at the state fair and got all new equipment but apparently they didn't hook this option up. I may have to call them...

They also have a download called DIRECTV2PC that allows you to stream any of your DVR'd programs to your computer. The interface looks exactly like the DVR interface that you'd see on your TV. That one is handy too.

For the wireless connection, I just bought one of these.

    Linksys WGA600N Dual Band Wireless N Gaming Bridge - 300Mbps, 802.11a/b/g/n at TigerDirect.com

Apparently it's not available anymore, but I'm sure there's other similar products. I liked it because you just configure the adapter, and the DVR sees it as being a wired/ethernet connection, so you don't have to configure anything on the DVR box at all.

Whoa, hold the phone here sunnysideup. I've been trying to talk to the DirecTV people for nearly a year about upgrading my equipment and adding another room. I've been a customer since 2006 and told them I would sign another two year contract if I could get there latest "new customer package" (hd/dvr updgrage, etc.). Every person I've talked to said they can't do that for me.

Threaten to leave and switch to Dish/Cable. They'll transfer you to the retention dept to try and convince you to stay on. The retention folks can make anything happen. :)

I did it at the state fair because they were giving away free flat screens with a contract. They basically cancelled my old account and the new one was put under my wifes name. That's how they got around it.

Just call them to enable whole house viewing, it is awesome! And then you get media sharing.

One bad thing about mediasharing is that it does NOT upscale video like my PS3 does. Thus...ps3 wins out! Plus..I have an older HR20 in my living room and the hardware is SLOW.
