I don't see it happening. The Cardinals' GM basically debunked it already by emphatically stating "We're not trading Rasmus" to reporters. And when I say emphatically, I mean just that. I'd be shocked if they did, but who knows.

I could see the Rays dealing him because I don't think they will catch the Yanks or Red Sox, but maybe not for Rasmus. It would help solidify the Cards SP though.

Yankees are very catchable. Starting pitching after CC Sabathia is extremely questionable.

And the Red Sox have injury issues.

I can't see them trading Rasmus. That doesn't mean they won't put together another package, however.

I would be asking for a lot more than Colby Rasmus for Hellickson.

    Re: Iowan Hellickson to Cardinals?

No doubt hellickson is one of the most promising young arms on the game but the cardinals problem isn't starting pitching its there bullpen. I don't see how this effectively addresses that issue unless they are thinking of moving mcclellan back to the Len's which again doesn't make sense as he is having a good year.

Also, I would have to assume that in order to get hellickson the cards would probably have to send either Shelby Miller or Carlos Martinez one of who has been billed a future ace and the other a dominant closer and I know the cards brass has said both are untouchable.

The only thing I could see is if Colby is really rubbing people the wrong way in the clubhouse and management thinksbjon Jay could do just as well. They also might bee thinking of dumping carpenter at the end of the year so perhaps another young front of the line starter is needed going forward.

I will admit that a rotation of Wainwright hellickson Garcia and Miller would be lethal in the next few years.

    Re: Iowan Hellickson to Cardinals?

Rasmus is the next J.D. Drew. He's underperformed so far, but will be semi-productive after leaving STL.

Obtaining Hellickson will allows the Cards to leave Kyle McClellan back to the bullpen.

I for one hope the Cards trade Rasmus. Jon Jay has played better than entire year anyway.

Wow I never put that together, but that may be true.

However, I really do like Rasmus (just as I did Drew, though) and hope they can keep him. BUT. If Jon Jay can come in and produce like numbers, we could really use that starter to do exactly as you say.

If Freese keeps his bat up, our lineup of Freese, Pujols, Holliday, Berkman and Jay could really do some damage with a little better bullpen. Of course a young starter could never hurt as we are really aging back there with Carp.

    Re: Iowan Hellickson to Cardinals?

If T.B is willing to trade one of the more highly-regarded young pitchers in the game anyone would be crazy not to at least consider it. I'm not entirely sure why Tampa would settle for Rasmus, but if they do, StL should jump at this. Hellickson, assuming he's willing to learn, could be a force under Duncan. He's got the raw stuff, when he learns how to harness it he's a front of the rotation talent.
The J.D. Drew comparison seems to fit Rasmus, he has the talent, but to this point hasn't shown he's willing to learn or work to improve on his natural ability. You have to have a certain kind of maturity to co-exist with LaRussa, and Colby wouldn't be the first that just didn't fit.
This deal could make it much easier to part with Carpenter after the year, freeing up some money for Pujols. Jay has been productive, and with the bats already in the lineup they need his table setting abilities more than Rasmus' all-or-nothing power potential. It's a lot easier to find a utility-type OF'er for cheap that can contribute than it is to get the type of starter Hellickson could be. McClellan has done a nice job, especially early in the year, but he's looked tired at times. He's much more effective when batters only see him once, there are few enough reliable arms in that pen and he'd immediately jump to the top of the pile. It makes a lot of sense for the Cardinals, and while I think Rasmus will have a nice career I'm not sure how it makes sense for Tampa.

This is exactly what I thought too. The problem with dealing for young talented pitchers is that if they blow out their arm, your get nothing in return for the player or players you gave up.....at least for a while. Worst case, like Brandon Webb, who was injured on opening day like 2 years ago and has been rehabbing ever since. Who knows if you ever get them back??
