A&M hires recruit's dad as coach - MBB

    Twitter - BrentZwerneman

I interrupt this vacation to report a trusted insider has told me Bryan High's John Reese will round out Billy Kennedy's A&M staff.
John Reese is dad of Bryan senior J-Mychal Reese, one of nation's top guard prospects. John is a highly respected coach in HS ranks.

The kid is local but I still don't like seeing parents being hired by a school that is recruiting them. At least his dad is well respected HS coach.

Danny Manning's dad Ed Manning conveniently accepted an KU assistant coach job from Larry brown, when Danny was entering his senior year in high school as one of the top recruits in the country.

A&M, KSU, and KU have done this before. It is sadly common. A&M got Bryan Davis by hiring a family member.

It may not be against the rules, but it should be.

    What an amazing coincidence!!!

I'm also amazed to see Billy G's name attached to two potentially shady recruiting practices in one weekend. I never would have seen that coming.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.

There is a new rule that prevents HS and AAU coaches from being a package deal with recruits. For example, Adam Woodbury's HS coach recently joined GMac's staff at Creighton. As a result, Woodbury cannot play at Creighton for two years after he graduates from HS. Evidently, this new rule doesn't apply to a parent (assuming the kid ends up at A&M).

At least when KU did it again with Mario Chalmers' dad and this father from A&M, they were at least HS BB coaches.

I believe Ed Manning was a truck driver or something. Complete BS.

kstate has hired coaches with connections to recruits, but afaik has never had the opportunity to hire a recruit's father. missouri did, many years back (julian winfield's father).

the rule applies to family and non-family alike. it doesn't apply to coaching positions, only non-coaching staff positions.
