I'm afraid of the new scoreboard & the marketing peeps

With the upcoming 2012 TV Rights arrangement with Tier 1, 2, and 3 rights becoming more of premium, Iowa State has a chance to make more revenue than before and Iowa State fans unable to attend home games will be offered access never seen before on a weekly basis.

This is all well and good. But let's talk about how to get more butts in the stands at Jack Trice. Revenue from people who donate, buy tickets, and show up for games should be a priority.

We have to upgrade the game day experience.

This must be balanced with sponsorships, commercials, and general game-spirit-killing crap that goes on during current games.

We must make a fundamental change away from scoreboard crowd cheer killing Apple Shuffles and Pizza Hut single person (WTH? 90 cents of product?) deliveries on a video board and let the damn cheerleaders cheer, the band play and the Pom squad... do their pomming and whatnot.

We're getting a new F5-a-Tron Mega Scoreboard. Along with advertisements, how about stats of the game we're watching (ala Hilton) and updates less than an hour old of our Big 12-2 brethren? Maybe some scores from the top #20 instead of Norfolk St vs. Mississippi Tech? It's 2011 - If I can get it on my phone or FM radio A FREAKING HOUR AHEAD OF THE SCOREBOARD I might not be paying as much attention or enjoying the game in front of me as much I could be.

I love the new scoreboard but if it's just a giant Applebee's commercial instead of actually improving the game day experience at ISU - then screw it. Blow it up. We don't need it. The football we paid for is down on the field.

JP better be listening to ticket holders a bit more than the rabid marketing folks to make this work. With all the extra TV money in the next few years, it would make sense to do so. I hope he makes the right decision.

Cheer killing apple shuffle? I can't ever remember an instance of one of those things killing the crowd noise. When has Jack Trice ever rocked all the way through a TV timeout?

I get what you're saying, that they'd better come up with a good way to use the new scoreboard, other than just being a giant billboard, and I agree. But showing game stats and scores from other games isn't going to float my boat.

I hope just because there is a new sound system, they don't have to overuse it and blast everything else out.

I want to see stats that stay on and update as the game proceeds. I hate the rolling scroll we now have to try and remember as it flys by. Is it me or are the side message boards blurry?

I'm not really scared on this. We can't afford to let marketing opportunities pass by, and the scoreboard will be one of our bigger-ticket ways to sell those ads.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.

Win games and people will come to the games, it is that simple. It is great that the stadium has all the updates and they were needed, but until CPR can put a winning team that is fun to watch on the field, the crowds will not be good. You can dress it all you want, but the product that you are selling at the end is the team.

    All of this is trivial.

Our program will never succeed until there is a foot-long hot dog topped with bbq brisket and peppers available at the concession stand.

Commercial breaks are exactly what they are called... breaks. They are a break for everybody. No one can be loud for an entire 3 hours.

Exactly. Turn it into an annoying minor league baseball game, or even a MLB game in one of those new stadiums where music is played between pitches. A fricking circus

Re: I'm afraid of the new scoreboard & the marketing peeps

I agree about the out-of-date scores. How hard can it be to keep those updated? It would be nice if the new scoreboard shows real-time scores, but that may be wishful thinking. I like the idea of showing up-to-date stats, as well.

The biggest change to the game day experience, of course, needs to be the rapid death of the forced pre-game cheers.

Re: I'm afraid of the new scoreboard & the marketing peeps

I hate modern scoreboards. I don't know about jack trice, but they have certainly killed the crowd every time out at Hilton. Give me a scoreboard that shows the score and let the band play. I know this is impossible as we need ad revenue, but I don't have to like it or the mindless masses that pay attention to it.

The money they make from marketing, advertisements, etc. are more important to the AD then a few fans opinion on a message board. Deal with it.

It's too bad Nickelodeon sucks now. Nick in the 90s kept me quiet all day long.
