    Re: dryer is broke-won't "tumble"

I had one years ago where this happened. Took the back panel off and there was a belt that went around the drum that had come off. Not sure if they still make them that way or not.

We had that problem too. I think the belt is the right diagnosis, or at least a good place to start.

Trying to figure out how to take panel off. it appears to be one solid piece wrapped around the unit

Belt was my first thought. If it's anything like the washer that I replaced a belt on, it will be a pain in the *** to replace. Hope it's an easy one!

Belt sounds logically right. Just to be safe, have you tried kicking it?

Top load you have to take the top off first, same with front load. If it slipped off, it should be easy tofix. If it's broke, call somebody

Thanks Fatkid. Gotta head out right now but will try later. I would have spent all day trying to figure that out

    Re: dryer is broke-won't "tumble"

Definitely the belt, and almost certainly broken. I've never seen a top-load dryer, not sure it's possible, so assuming it a front load. If you can't find a way to get the top off, check at the very bottom of the front panel. You should find 2 5/16th screws, after taking them out pull the bottom of the panel towards you and it should slide down and drop out. From there you can use a flashlight to look for a belt lying on the floor. Before going any further, unplug the machine so as to not get a surprise. Aside from the heating element you can't get a real serious shock, but it's not a lot of fun either. To replace the belt you've got to get it around the drum, which means you have to take off the entire front support, loop the belt over the drum, put the support back on and then hook the belt around the motor shaft and tension pulley without benefit of sight. It takes a few times to develop a feel for it, but a pro can do the whole thing in under half an hour. Every model is a bit different, so without knowing the model, it would be hard to walk through all of it, but it's pretty intuitive if you're mechanically inclined.
If you don't feel comfortable fixing it, I would order the belt before having someone look at it. Dey Distributing is the option I'd recommend if your in the DSM metro area. Usually the parts stores mark the price up less than the repair company, a common Amana belt shouldn't cost much more than 20-25 regardless of where you get it, and some are even in the 10-15 range. Any respectable appliance repairman has a bin full of belts in the back of their van and should be able to do it in half an hour (or at least only charge you a half hour if your nice to them) There is such a thing as the @$$hole tax, so treat 'em right and save some money. You can call a few different places and they should be able to give a pretty accurate estimate, just make sure they know the model number and to bring a belt with them.

Sounds like what you have there is one of those new fancy circular ovens. The laundry room isn't really the most convenient place for that, probably should move it to the kitchen.
