John Walters' comments on 810 WHB in KC this morning

    As always, he sounded great.

    - Team was disappointed with last year's finish, but felt they had a better team than prior year's bowl team.
    - Brutal schedule again this year.
    - Feels this year's team is better than last year's, but again, record might not show it.
    - Rhoads is one of the best he's seen at instilling confidence in players and coaches. Great inspirational speaker.
    - Players absolutely love the guy.
    - Everyone he talks to around the league feels team has improved every year under Rhoads. Expect better team this year too.
    - Arnaud was appreciated by everyone, but his numbers don't wow you.
    - Arnaud capable of having big game, but mostly a calming influence. Very competitive.
    - Loved Arnaud, but ISU needs more dynamic play out of QB position than what they've had. Haven't had near the production of other B12 QB's.
    - Offense as a whole needs to be more dynamic.
    - Only averaged 317 ypg and 4 yards per play. Can't win with those numbers. No where near explosive offenses in B12.
    - Jantz only had 15 practices in spring. Not surprised wasn't named starter given lack of practice.
    - Thinks if Jantz has good August, has excellent chance to be the starter.
    - Best WR group Rhoads has had. Lot of excitement for Horne. West is explosive.
    - Will be solid defensively again.
    - Key will be offense's production.
    - Will miss Lamaak. Farniok taking his spot. O line very good. If they come together in run blocking, thinks SJ can explode this year.
    - Jantz will take attention away from SJ with his running. Extremely athletic.
    - Rhoads wants more explosive offense. Have to get better at balancing taking care of the ball and taking chances.
    - Only average 21 points ppg last year. Not anywhere good enough to win in B12.
    - Burnam terrific DC. Knott is clear leader on team.
    - Only 11 sacks last year and no pressure on QB. Have to improve that. Maggitt should make a difference this year.
    - Corners exposed by lack of pass rush last year. Got picked apart by QB's having forever to throw.
    - Wants Iowa series to continue, but downgrade strength of other opponents in future. Biggest event in state. Will be a challenge to keep them on the schedule with new B12 schedule. ISU needs wins in non conference to improve bowl chances.
    - UNI game drew largest home crowd in ISU history. Thinks fans will still come if downgrade non con.
    - Lot of excitement with team this year. Team is excited to play South powers every year.
    - Rhoads has pulled off big upset wins on road, but not at home. Thinks we will get someone this year.
    - 6 road opponents all played in bowl games. Team feels they will go to bowl game.
    - Excited about new B12... especially given circumstance last year at this time.
    - Thinks DE is most important position on field after QB.
    - Self proclaimed horrible golfer.
    - Thinks ISU will finish 6-6 and 7th in B12. Qualify for bowl game. Thinks Texas game will be crazy.

Good stuff. I agree (as do most CF'ers) with his ideas for non-conference games. We should not be playing BCS conference opponents (or even top-level mid-majors like Utah last year) in non-conference play ever again for the other 2 games. Gimme UNI or South Dakota State (or whatever) and a mid-to-low MAC or Sun Belt team every time, in addition to Iowa.

Oh, the Texas game will be crazy. We know that we can beat them now.

We used to hope it, but now we've done it. We'll be rabid about it this year.

Thanks for the recap. I think John has the pulse of the program pretty much down.

6-6 would be great considering what they would have to accomplish to get that.

I know 6-6 isn't elite or anything, but to average 6 wins in your first 3 when your predecessor can only get 5 wins in 2 indicates that you might be a pretty solid coach.

You had me up until here. I'm a firm believer that we can get home and series going with schools like Wazzou, UK, NCSt., Pitt, USF, etc. We don't need UI.

I have to agree, especially now that we have the same Big XII schedule every year. Add UNI most years and Iowa every year and there's very little change in our entire schedule.

We only have 1 coach in the last 95 years to have a non-losing record (who coached for more than a season), if CPR can keep his record at or above .500, he'll put himself on a pretty elite level.

Wait, you're advocating that we drop our only meaningful rivalry game and pick up a home-and-home against comparable competition to Iowa? If we're going to play another BCS conference school, it needs to be Iowa, if you want to drop Iowa, pick up another patsy. Makes no sense to schedule an equally difficult schedule but lose the rivalry and money making opportunity for the communities and the programs that the rivalry game brings.

    Yes.

And I guess I'm missing what's meaningful about the Iowa game besides the fact that they're currently on the schedule?

    I'm what's called a Cyclones fan. I don't give a **** about Iowa.
